Chapter 83: Fury and Sorrow
The rebellious Black Dragon, the fallen Demon Dragon, also the oldest offspring of the Dragon King, the leader of the Seven Heavenly Dragons.
【Black Dragon: Nidhogg】.
Just the exchange of gazes made Roy feel as if invisible claws were about to shred his heart, and a breath from the ancient underworld made him shudder for a moment.
Both of them were sequentially grade 4, but compared to this, the auras of the Crimson Blood Fire Dragon and the Frost Giant Dragon were nothing at all. It was a being deeper and more terrifying than a raging volcano, biting cold frost, or acid rain that consumed everything.
Ruler of the sky, pure destruction, the true majesty of the Dragon King.
In the past, he probably would have turned and fled right away.
But after a moment of stiffness, Roy patted the restless Golden-Winged Griffin and urged it to move forward.
Carrying so many expectations to get here, it wasn’t the time to stop now.
The agitated dragon pack was sharpening their claws, bloodlust overflowing.
On the mountaintop, Nidhogg growled, “You’re no match for him.”
“He is mine.”
The bloodthirsty dragons showed rare rationale and obediently retreated.
For a brief moment, Roy felt like he was seeing a dragon prince who cherished his kinship and loved his family.
But as the griffin flew up to the summit and landed before Nidhogg, that fleeting illusion vanished.
Within the dark golden vertical slit similar to Bahamut, a chilling intent and madness flowed.
That gaze was eerily reminiscent of the Cultists manipulated by the power of the evil gods from Roy’s memories, but Nidhogg had something more.
Hatred.
A heavy, bone-chilling hatred.
“I see, Maligos’s guess was correct, I can indeed feel the power of your father within you.”
Nidhogg narrowed his eyes: “Repent.”
“What?” Roy was slightly confused.
“The blood of the False King, I want you to repent.”
“Fafnir, Balagas, Krolyen, and countless brethren died because of you, and the bloodline of three relatives has been tainted by you.”
Nidhogg pointed towards the volcano below, indifferent: “Do you see that? That’s Balagas, the final resting place of my brother whom you harmed, and now, I will take your blood as a blood sacrifice for him, for Fafnir, and for all my countless brethren!”
Roy fell silent for a moment, then a cold laugh escaped him.
The earlier fear had dissipated, leaving only anger.
Nidhogg’s and the dragon race’s fate was indeed a tragedy, and it would be a lie to say he felt no sympathy.
But his anger was a thousand times greater than that sympathy.
Not for any other reason, just because he was human.
Without looking towards the volcano, Roy pointed instead to the distant royal capital: “Do you see that?”
“That’s Lionheart City, a home where countless citizens of the kingdom live in peace. Now dragged into the flames of war by you, countless people are displaced, while you ignore their wrongful deaths.”
“Whatever you and the people of the First Era had, what does that have to do with the present ones?!”
“What does it matter?” Nidhogg frowned slightly as if he didn’t understand, then his expression darkened: “Of course it matters.”
“To you, that’s history from several eras ago. To me, all the pain feels just like yesterday!”
“Ziegfried! I still remember that day when he vowed to protect Fafnir’s happiness and share peace with the dragon race! But in the end, he killed Fafnir personally with the stigma of the Evil Dragon!”
Dark clouds surged, and the ominous lightning made Nidhogg’s face appear extremely ferocious.
“It’s your kind who betrayed your vows, and thus you shall pay the price! The predecessors have died, and the consequences should be borne by the successors!”
Not fearful of Nidhogg’s imposing presence, Roy replied calmly: “But you know Fafnir fell because of the 【Cataclysm】, and humanity’s retaliation was merely self-defense.”
Roy admitted he wasn’t an overly sentimental person; if anything, he was somewhat selfish.
Protecting those around him, caring for those in front of him, that was all he could do.
However, throughout this journey, seeing so many vibrant lives wither before his eyes, witnessing those ravaged by war, emaciated crowds, and the knights battered all over yet charging forward, he still felt something burning in his chest.
As an Extraordinary Being, as a knight of the kingdom, as their hope, he had the obligation to speak for them and denounce such an arrogant Heavenly Dragon.
“Moreover, even if Ziegfried made mistakes, he has long since descended into the underworld with Fafnir, paying the price. No matter what, your hatred shouldn’t be directed at the humans who stood against you! What have those innocent common people, knights, and nobles done to deserve the flames of war you instigated?!”
Nidhogg froze for a moment, a clear expression of thoughtfulness and confusion appearing on his face.
But soon, his expression began to twist, the dark scales swirling like biting flames, and the dark emotions in his eyes ignited.
“Shut up.”
“Shut up, shut up, shut up!”
“I don’t care! You humans all deserve to die! Even if the eras pass with time, this hatred will never fade! Regardless of right or wrong, you should all be buried along with Fafnir and my brethren!”
Not disappointed.
Roy just felt a wave of sorrow.
That sorrow stemmed from the depths of his soul, belonging to the blood of the Dragon King.
The world has never been simply about right or wrong; real intense emotions cannot be suppressed by rationality.
At this point, the chains of hatred could never be cut, and giving up the struggle would only lead to being mercilessly consumed by the other side. Blood debts must be repaid in blood, and that was the only consensus in this war; blood and fire were the only halts to it.
Ziegfried, Fafnir, Bahamut, Nidhogg, their destinies had long been sealed.
The only thing he could seize was the present.
The now that decided the victor of the human-dragon conflict.
Roy leaped off the griffin and slowly stepped forward.
No need for words, only unabashed killing intent remained in their locked gazes.
The atmosphere was heavy, almost tangible.
The slaughter of the battlefield, the roars of the dragon race, the charges of humanity, the scarlet flames and frost slicing the sky, all the commotion froze into silence at this moment.
In their gazes, only each other remained.
In the next instant, their figures disappeared from the spot simultaneously.
Drawing swords from their sheaths, claws bared viciously.
The Dragon Tooth Blade collided with the claws of the Black Dragon in mid-air, a piercing clash echoing through the void.
Not even a brief pause, they launched a fierce assault again and again.
Blades and claws intertwined, creating visible pressures that formed a storm, as if two ferocious beasts were continuously battling.
The Golden-Winged Griffin was on high alert, yet found there was no chance to intervene in the ferocious combat.
Even the speed-oriented Golden-Winged Griffin was like this; the gathered dragons overhead were completely stunned, unable to think of helping at all.
Dark gold and pitch-black light collided fiercely.
Large swathes of dragon scales flying everywhere.
【Evil Dragon Blood Armor】 and 【Steel-like Bones】 were torn apart in a single strike, and a streak of crimson fell over Roy’s shoulder.
On the other side, the upward blade of 【Sky-rending Dragon Claw】 cut through the Black Dragon’s chest, causing dragon blood to splatter on the spot as well.
In the white-hot blade fight, neither side could gain an advantage; the best plan was to create openings.
Thus, the eyes of both flashed with the same fierce determination.
In an instant, dark gold and deep thunder rumbled through the sky.
