Chapter 89: After the Victory
The dragon clan’s turmoil shook the entire human world.
Unlike the friction with the Holy Light Church, the dragon clan was a real alien force, even being the masterminds behind the creation of the Evil Dragon Society.
Legend has it that Nidhogg fell to corruption from magic and incited internal strife within the dragon clan, only to be defeated by the then-dragon king Bahamut himself.
Forget the clouds of war from nineteen years ago; adding a crazed magic dragon from the mythical era who once challenged the dragon king turned every major faction uneasy.
The previous reconnaissance forces were just a temporary fix; the number of troops needed for a war was astronomical.
Whether to send reinforcements became a hot topic of debate among every faction.
The princes of Golden Sands and Southern Sea weren’t short-sighted either; considering future alliances, they were eager to push for mobilization.
But princes are not kings, and the two nations were not unified.
Even the various schools within the Mage Association were embroiled in fierce debates, leaving the Sage Booker’s head spinning.
In a sense, the Mage Association was the least united organization; things were fine normally, but when a crisis hit, their loose structure exposed its flaws.
In the end, only the saint Alice and the border duke’s daughter Xue Nuo of the Empire led massive troops under the banner of aiding their human comrades to rush to the kingdom right away.
However, no one expected this war that rattled the entire continent would end so quickly.
“The magic dragon is dead, the dragon clan has retreated, the kingdom’s victory is secured…”
The heads of the schools were exchanging glances in disbelief; the terrifying enemy they feared had been resolved so swiftly.
They say the Lionheart Kingdom is virtuous in martiality, but this was stretching it too far, right?!
The beast-slaying king back then was one thing, but now there’s a dragon-slaying princess and a dragon-slaying knight to boot.
Are you all professional dragon slayers? Just show up and take down a few?!
The round table fell silent until the Sage’s hearty laughter filled the air.
“Everyone, it seems the kingdom’s friends are much stronger than we thought! Even the magic dragon is not invincible!”
“The topic of sending troops need not be debated anymore; assisting our war-torn allies should require no further hesitation, right?”
The gray-haired elder’s teasing tone carried a hint of serious wakefulness, and even the most cunning mages found it hard to counter.
The Mage Association, Golden Sands, Southern Sea, the Emerald Council, and supplies from various factions streamed into the Lionheart Kingdom, which had been ravaged by war and was in dire need of revival.
Of course, the fallen dragon head did not mean the dragon clan would disappear entirely.
Under the influence of Nidhogg’s lingering taint, disorganized dragons continued to wander within the kingdom, rampaging and plundering.
But with three high-level Extraordinary Beings stationed in the kingdom’s center, safety was guaranteed. Coupled with reinforcements from the north and south, the dragon clan faced constant defeats, unable to stir up any more trouble for a while.
A month later, as aid supplies from various sources continually arrived, the war-torn Lionheart Kingdom finally began to revive.
Though the scars of the dragon war were yet to fully heal, the kingdom was already alive with energy, ready to throw a grand banquet to celebrate and announce this well-earned victory.
On that day, the shattered royal capital was ablaze with light.
Since the war began, the royal capital finally lifted its supply restrictions.
From castle banquets to city squares, food and wine were supplied in abundance, with dancers singing and dancing, unleashing the pent-up frustration and pain brought on by war in a non-stop revelry.
Representatives from the major powers of the western continent arrived at the Red Fortress, offering their congratulations.
This time, however, the star of the royal banquet was no longer the Lionheart King.
“I had heard your beauty was unparalleled, yet I didn’t expect your might to be just as remarkable!”
“To reach such a high level at such a young age, your talent might even surpass the king himself!”
“I raise this cup to you on behalf of the Golden Sands, to honor you and the great kingdom!”
Amid the clinking of goblets, the princess draped in red simply smiled faintly, her long brows arching with a hint of playful teasing.
“Honor… but I heard that Count Tucker strongly opposed Prince Douglas’s troop mobilization plan?”
“Ah, uh…”
“Just a joke,” Charlotte said, perfectly serious, surveying the sweating nobles before her, she declared proudly, “I understand your difficulties; our friendship must always be built on the foundation of interests.”
“I truly appreciate your aid. But please remember, the Lionheart Kingdom won this war through blood and fire, not your so-called friendship.”
The dragon-slaying princess’s reputation was formidable, and her powerful aura made even the old-school nobles feel a chill.
Even if they felt slightly impolite in their teasing, they could only respond with smiles.
Respect is earned through strength.
Charlotte’s two feats of dragon-slaying were enough to make her stand tall above the rest. Not only were her peers impressed, but even these elders dared not show a hint of disrespect.
In that fiery aura that seemed to burn eternally, no one would merely regard her as a princess, but as the kingdom’s future sole heir.
And if anyone could rival the dragon-slaying princess in popularity at the banquet, it was undoubtedly the war’s greatest contributor.
“Lord Roy! It’s Lord Roy!”
Even before he arrived, cheers erupted from the knights outside the banquet hall.
Nobles from various factions couldn’t help but look back, eager to catch a glimpse of the knight.
The pride of the western continent, the princess’s sworn knight, and the slayer of the magic dragon Nidhogg.
If respect was for the princess, admiration was afforded to this knight.
Even the oldest and most seasoned nobles, whose minds had been dulled by the years, felt their blood boil with respect for his legendary deeds.
And this was the first time he publicly appeared after the war ended.
Of course, with the princess leading, her gaze shifted elsewhere, which was somewhat disrespectful.
“Let us welcome our hero!”
The moment the black-haired boy appeared, the Lionheart Prince was the first to clap.
Then knights, maids, and nobles alike gathered, erupting in cheers, completely drowning the elegant noble banquet in their fervor.
Even the knight being hailed looked a bit bewildered.
The outpouring of admiration stunned the foreign representatives.
“Truly a renowned dragon-slaying knight, this is impressive…?” Count Tucker, as was his custom, wished to flatter the princess, but to his surprise, the red-haired princess had already left them and walked directly into the crowd welcoming her.
“Everyone, please calm down; don’t make it too difficult for him!”
Charlotte’s slightly exasperated voice finally hushed the crowd’s excitement.
Holding a wine cup, Naz teased, “Yeah, don’t make it hard for my royal sister; she should be the one most eager to welcome the hero!”
Just moments ago, the foreign nobles had been rendered silent; now Charlotte found herself a bit flustered, “I-I’m not; I didn’t…”
But no matter how she explained, the understanding crowd was already laughing and moving aside, clearing a path for them.
