Chapter 105: Want You to Stay
The first thing the Saintess did upon her visit to the outside area was head straight to the local church to host prayers and announce the arrival of the Holy Light’s gospel.
This was even prioritized over visiting the local nobility.
Alice couldn’t contain herself and rushed straight to the Red Castle just to see me, leaving most of the troops from White Harbor behind.
After finishing her prayers, Roy was the first to step forward to express his concern: “You’ve worked hard, Alice.”
“The work of the Saintess is important, but don’t overexert yourself. I’ll be with you all day today. What’s next on the agenda?”
Alice glanced over lightly, paused for several seconds in silence, and then, with few words, stated, “Visit the wounded.”
After saying that, Alice stepped forward without looking back.
This…!
This is how Alice behaves with outsiders; even in formal situations, she doesn’t show excessive warmth.
In other words, aside from formalities, she rarely shows any personal touch.
She only becomes clingy in front of me.
But what was that earlier?
Did the little maid get angry?
This is… uh, that actually seems pretty likely.
Imagine coming all this way, facing numerous dangers, full of joy to reunite, only to see your beloved doing that with another woman at first glance.
If she didn’t stab me with a sword then she must have quite a temper!
Thinking this way, Roy fell into deep reflection and had no choice but to obediently close his mouth and follow Alice.
The prayers were just the beginning.
Just like Charlotte was busy with matters, Alice’s schedule was packed.
To sum it up, it was as she said: visiting the wounded.
The war hadn’t dragged on too long, and food in the royal capital was still sufficient.
But medical resources were a bigger issue.
Veszyra’s medical level isn’t weak; clerics and mages, in certain aspects, even surpass the medical knowledge of Roy’s past life.
However, both mages and clerics have their limits.
The extraordinary power consumed for healing injuries far exceeds that of defeating enemies.
Once extraordinary power is depleted, relying solely on magic potions and rudimentary medical methods simply won’t suffice.
During wartime, medical resources are prioritized for extraordinary beings, then frontline soldiers, and lastly civilians. Not only in the royal capital but also many refugees flooding in, many of whom are wounded.
Over time, the medical system in the royal capital has long been overloaded.
Until Alice arrived.
Extraordinary Beings of sequence 5 are said to be able to fight against thousands, and clerics of the same sequence are more efficient in healing than a hundred thousand nuns without extraordinary power.
In the makeshift refugee camp, the golden-haired Saintess sat quietly in the center, her fingers clasped together in prayer.
Pure Holy Light power rose continuously, enveloping the entire camp. It recharged the already weary clerics and even caused some lighter injuries to begin healing automatically.
The vast majority of civilians may never understand what extraordinary means in their lifetime.
But when the pure morning light flows through, their critically endangered loved ones regain their vitality, and the excruciating wounds no longer hurt, they are all moved to tears.
Today, the refugee camp was no longer filled with cries of suffering; instead, there were prayers and gratitude.
To output Holy Light power covering over ten thousand people is a massive drain, even for Alice.
Afterward, Alice slowly exhaled and was about to get up, but she stumbled and nearly fell.
Fortunately, Roy, standing nearby, quickly caught the frail Saintess in his arms.
Roy, without thinking, emphasized, “Didn’t I say not to push yourself?”
“Compared to the suffering of the people, as a Saintess, exerting a little effort isn’t much. Besides…”
Stealing a glance at the boy in front of her, Alice couldn’t help but reveal a gentle expression.
Since the dragon-slaying knight is fighting bravely, saving the kingdom from crisis, it’s only natural for the Saintess to heal hearts and bring some comfort to the suffering people.
“Oh, when it comes to your own matters, you never listen to me, do you? You’re really not obedient,” Roy said with a wry smile, helping the weak boy.
Little did he know, Alice narrowed her eyes and coldly responded, “Does the master have the right to lecture Alice?”
“As a knight, it’s rather rude to be cheeky in broad daylight in front of the princess. The master is the one who isn’t obedient.”
…I was left speechless!
Just when Roy was feeling embarrassed, several children’s figures ran past.
“Wow! Look, it’s the real Saintess!”
“But who’s that next to her?”
“Dummy! That’s our dragon-slaying knight! He’s the one who defeated the evil dragons! Super impressive!”
Unlike the compliments normally thrown at knights and nobility, the children’s praise was pure and innocent, making Roy feel slightly proud but also a bit shy.
“But why are they hugging each other?”
“Dummy! The knight is not only the sworn knight but also the Saintess’s guard!”
“So that’s how it is… huh? But can guards hug like that? Didn’t the knight already propose to the princess?”
“…Oh yeah. Why is that?!”
The kids fell into a heated discussion.
Alice’s expression grew colder with their words.
“Alice forgotten, right? Master proposed to Charlotte, how wonderful.”
Listening to the girl’s emotionless remark, even Roy felt a chill.
Children are brutally honest; instead of feeling shy, Roy felt scared and hurried to take Alice away from the scene.
After finishing today’s agenda and returning to the church, the sky had darkened, and the moonlight was falling.
All the way back, Alice hardly spoke, like a lifeless statue.
Even colder than a statue.
Because statues don’t intentionally avoid eye contact.
Roy felt a bit helpless about this. After all, he was in the wrong and couldn’t explain himself.
The gentle interactions before had made Roy nearly forget that Alice is essentially a rather cold girl who, when in a bad mood, doesn’t fuss or shout, but that makes things rather tricky.
Maybe it’s best to let this girl have some peace.
“You’ve worked hard today; go back early to rest. I’ll head back first.”
Roy stepped off the carriage, saying his farewells.
But just as he turned to leave, a delicate wrist rose, and the girl weakly tugged at his collar.
Noticing the subtle change, Roy turned back to see her looking like she had something to say but couldn’t find the words.
The stillness of the night amplified the girl’s aggrieved whisper loud and clear.
“Are you going back to accompany her?”
Roy was taken aback for a moment, then smiled and took her gently by the delicate hand.
“Do you want me to stay?”
After a slight nod, like a small animal, Alice gingerly stepped off the carriage and then linked her arm with his, much like a little girl reluctant to let go of her beloved toy, cherishing and clinging to it.
Her normally expressionless face, devoid of fluctuations throughout the day, was now softly illuminated by the hazy moonlight, revealing a hint of quiet joy.
