Chapter 113: Threat to All
“The culprit behind the dragon kin’s corruption, Nidhogg, we need to investigate exactly what power caused its fall.”
Rob spread his hands in helplessness, saying, “That’s true, but I’m not skilled in detecting Extraordinary Power, so I have to rely on the two of you.”
Extraordinary bloodline techniques have their specialization; even though Lionheart as a golden-level bloodline has explosive power that rivals the dragon kin, its perception is still rather mediocre.
On the other hand, the Holy Maiden’s Holy Light is naturally attuned to evil powers, and she has lived for hundreds of years, so asking her to detect it couldn’t be more suitable.
Despite differences in emotional leanings with Roy, this was a serious matter, and Teresa couldn’t afford to slack off.
She placed a hand on her ample bosom and earnestly assured Rob, “Your Majesty, the power of the dragon kin’s corruption is not just a crisis for the kingdom, but a threat we all of humankind must take seriously. I will do my utmost.”
After a slight nod, Rob turned his gaze to Roy.
Before Roy could speak, his voice impatiently echoed in their minds.
“Hey, what’s this about an elder? Rob’s talking more smoothly now!”
“Uh?”
“At this time, we need an experienced, extraordinary bloodline expert who is well-versed to uncover the essence of the corruption phenomenon! It looks like it’s time for…”
“It’s time for this old man to step in.”
Ignoring Rowlin’s comment, Roy decisively projected the remnant spirit of the Dragon King, who conveniently interrupted Rowlin’s daydreaming.
An ancient demigod, even a remnant spirit carries an unspeakable authority.
Be it the current king or a world-saving hero, they couldn’t help but show a little more respect.
“I am Teresa, pleased to meet you, Lord Bahamut.”
Bahamut’s gaze was somewhat dazed, seemingly appreciating Teresa, “No need for formalities. I’ve heard Roy speak of you. Your achievements in saving your kin far surpass mine. This era belongs to you, so there’s no need to be overly cautious around an old spirit like me.”
“Your insight is remarkable, Lord Bahamut, but even I can’t help but feel a bit excited to meet an ancient demigod,” Teresa replied, loosening up a bit and making a jest.
“Hoho, for me, the power of Holy Light is even more refreshing.”
The two high-ranking beings exchanged a bit of friendly flattery, which made Rowlin feel quite envious.
“Why, why can’t I step up?!”
“Didn’t you say we need an experienced, well-traveled, extraordinary bloodline expert? You think you’re better than Bahamut in those aspects?” Roy retorted in his mind.
Rowlin was left momentarily speechless, unable to respond any further.
Why were there so many big shots around this guy? Just when she thought she could show off, there was no chance!
“Enough chit-chat; let’s get down to business.”
Bahamut and Teresa moved forward, placing their hands on the remains of the black dragon, releasing their senses.
The deep dragon aura mixed with the pure power of Holy Light spread out.
Even in death, the bodies of extraordinary beings retained lingering power, let alone a mythical biological dragon.
The once lifeless corpse trembled slightly, like ripples stirred up by pebbles, releasing invisible waves of power.
Charlotte and Rob frowned uncomfortably.
Alice also twitched her brows, feeling an eerie chill. The Holy Light was particularly sensitive to evil powers, and for her, this was a considerable reaction.
As for Roy, he felt a heart-racing sensation, sensing something from the ancient nether that was far more terrifying than a giant dragon casting a deep gaze towards him.
Around them, it felt as though they had plunged into darkness, losing light and sound, only the thudding heartbeat echoing the primal fear of living beings.
Coming back to his senses, Roy realized cold sweat had thoroughly soaked through his clothes.
And Bahamut and Teresa, who personally sensed this power, looked even paler than Rob and the others.
It seemed he felt the power that led Nidhogg to fall through Bahamut.
Seeing their strong reactions, Rob couldn’t help but grow anxious, “What’s going on?”
“Let’s get to the conclusion.”
Teresa exhaled and said in a serious voice, “There are remnants of Death God’s power within Nidhogg.”
“You should have heard that a few years ago, the Necromancer faction sacrificed an entire city’s life force to lure the Death God down.”
“Didn’t the Church manage to stop them?” Charlotte asked, a bit confused.
Teresa bitterly shook her head, revealing the truth, “No, they succeeded. The Death God indeed descended partially.”
“Only the Pope himself came to take it down on the spot. Even so, the remnants of the Death God have vanished, posing a considerable threat that the Church has yet to resolve.”
“Who would have thought that an evil artifact from the Eastern Continent would be linked to the black dragon…”
If the evil god’s artifact was already alarming, the next piece of information was even more horrifying.
“But aside from the Death God’s presence, I sense another, even more terrifying power…”
At this point, even Teresa, a high-ranking extraordinary being, couldn’t help but tremble slightly.
Bahamut, grasping his dragon staff, timely spoke, sighing heavily, “Let this old man explain.”
“Within Nidhogg lies the essence of the Cataclysmic Calamity.”
As soon as those words left his lips, it was akin to a bolt from the blue for everyone present, except for Roy, who was startled but not overly surprised.
Right now, Veszyra was relatively peaceful, but the Cataclysmic Calamity was no secret among the high-ranking factions. Roy had even previously shared intel verified by that Angel.
The Cataclysmic Calamity that had destroyed the mythic era was far from mere legend; it was a tangible threat.
Now, with the Dragon King Bahamut as a firsthand witness to that calamity, he would surely provide a more detailed explanation.
“Nidhogg indeed fell to the power of the Cataclysmic Calamity; that’s not unexpected. But I did not foresee that the power of the Cataclysmic Calamity would become so active here…”
“Wait, wait.” Rob scratched his head, a bit lost.
“What exactly is this Cataclysmic Calamity?”
“Ah, if we’re starting from that point…”
After pondering for a few seconds, Bahamut finally resumed, “It’s a power that lures one into corruption.”
“Unresistable, unpurifiable; if a being is tainted, it will corrupt their bloodline from top to bottom. A strong bloodline can temporarily fend off that power, but if the heart and soul aren’t strong enough, there’s still a risk of being eroded.”
Looking at his fallen offspring, Bahamut murmured sadly, “Especially during moments of inner weakness, it’s most dangerous.”
Upon hearing this, Rob reflexively touched his own mouth, where the mark of defeat from the black dragon had been branded, preventing him from participating in the final battle against the seven great dragons.
“It seems my heart isn’t strong enough, either,” Rob chuckled bitterly.
“But wasn’t this Cataclysmic Calamity already resolved?” Charlotte inquired.
“Instead of resolved, it’s more like… temporarily delayed. Back then, we gods joined forces, thinking we could eliminate it with brute force, but we couldn’t. We could only seal it for a time. That battle saw too many demigods fall, and far too many tainted by that power… It’s regrettable; it barely counts as a solution.”
Bahamut’s words were light, yet they conveyed the brutality of that battle and weighed heavily on the heart.
After all, it was a crisis that even the ancient gods couldn’t solve, bringing an end to the mythic era.
With the humans’ current strength, how could they contend against it?
