Chapter 5: The Season of Mating
All Things Wither, an ancient cult originating from the Verdant Council, has long been a threat to the elven descendants.
The cultists, who worship the Fallen Mother Tree, are adept in withering magic, using sinister and strange methods. However, compared to the Cult of the Evil Dragon and the Necromancer Academy, they’re much more low-key and rarely confront other forces outside the Verdant Council.
That was until last year’s Trial of Blue.
Roy unconsciously glanced at the elven girl beside him.
All Things Wither isn’t cowardly or fond of peace; they’re simply fixated on the bloodline of the elven descendants. And Nia, who has awakened the Forest Elf golden bloodline, is precisely the reason these cultists were driven mad enough to launch an attack in Academy City.
“Ugh…”
Nia herself took a sharp breath, clearly not feeling well.
“What the heck, why are these guys back again?”
“Actually, the previous hunt had already wiped out All Things Wither’s bases in Academy City. It won’t be easy for them to infiltrate again, and the Crimson Sorcerers have cleaned up the cultists surrounding the city. But…” the old man stroked his beard and advised, “it’s always good to be cautious.”
“I understand.” Roy nodded.
At least until this semester ends, Nia wouldn’t leave the area around Academy City. Moreover, she already has rank 5 power, so there’s no real need to worry.
If something were to happen, with his rank 4 strength, he wouldn’t fear any priest under the cult leader.
The bloodline from the Dragon King is not to be underestimated; not even cultists, let alone the offspring of evil gods, should take it lightly!
Unlike back then when he could only rely on powerful factions like a ‘slacker villain’, Roy now had enough power to provide protection for those around him.
Thinking of this, Roy showed a reassuring smile to the girl beside him and comforted her, “So…”
Nia looked surprised, “So, does that mean I can skip going home just in case something happens on the journey?!”
After a long pause, Roy finally squeezed out a response, “Just like you.”
Whether it’s optimism or blissful ignorance, upon hearing that All Things Wither was re-emerging, Nia not only didn’t panic but looked as elated as if she were on a long holiday.
As soon as the meeting ended, she happily dragged Alice out for shopping.
Meanwhile, Roy accompanied Charlotte to the stable where magical beasts were kept.
“Honestly, I think something’s off about Cake.”
“Off?”
“You’ll see.”
Seeing Charlotte looking worried, Roy couldn’t help but feel a bit anxious.
This area is designated for magical beasts to frolic. It has woods, hills, and even a sizable artificial lake.
Along the way, various types of magical beasts could be seen frolicking freely in the woods, the lake, and the sky.
There are dedicated trainers taking care of them, so there’s no need to worry about these mounts losing control.
In the midst of the diverse herd, the Golden-Winged Griffin and the red-gold griffin standing side by side were the brightest spots in the colorful mix.
The two elegant griffins strolled peacefully under the blue sky and white clouds, passing by the lakeside like a serene painting.
“What’s wrong with that?” Roy wondered.
Isn’t that perfectly fine?!
Every magical beast has the instinct to follow the strong, especially a naturally proud griffin, right?
Since the dragon-slaying battle, Cheese has become a true idol in the griffin community. Roy hadn’t heard of any griffin mocking those golden wings in ages.
And Cake has been getting closer to him too.
After all, that guy seemed to have had his eyes on Cheese for a while now.
At this rate, his good bro is clearly on the right track; it won’t be long before he secures Cake!
“No, just wait and see.” Charlotte was a bit exasperated.
Roy patiently waited for a few seconds.
He watched as the two griffins played like kittens, rolling around and playfully nipping at each other, then they rolled right into the grass.
Then he heard a series of electrifying and ambiguous calls, like a gentle breeze passing by.
The trainers scratched their heads, but nobody stepped up to intervene.
It was only then that Roy noticed similar sounds all around.
Summer had arrived.
It was the magical beasts’ mating season, which explained why so many mounts were unleashing their instincts here. After all, the wind-resistant time for magical beast mounts is limited. Unless the mounts are specially paired, they’re usually housed separately in the stables.
No wonder this place was so spacious; the academy set it up not only for them to play but also for some outdoor mating parties?!
Once he thought about all that life-giving harmony among the magical beasts around, Roy found it hard to stay put.
Even without any unseemly sights around, Charlotte looked down, clearly unsure where to place her gaze. “Do you think they’re getting a bit too close?”
Roy was too happy for his bro’s relationship progress to let Charlotte ruin the moment.
“Griffins need to experience free love too; give them some space, okay?”
“But according to the rules, royal griffins’ bloodlines can’t be spread outside!”
“Haven’t I mentioned before? The bloodline of the Golden-Winged Griffin is no weaker than that of the royal griffins. In fact, a stronger bloodline can actually benefit the offspring more.”
Since Cake was indeed Charlotte’s pet, Roy didn’t want to say too much.
Bro, I can only help you so much!
Moments later, Charlotte finally had an answer: “Then let’s do it your way.”
“Anyway, you’re already mine; if anything happens, just hold you accountable.” Charlotte smiled playfully.
“?”
“But still, we can’t do that out in the open; doesn’t that ruin the royal family’s dignity? I’ll go find someone to arrange a private room for them.”
So that evening, after long gazing at each other through closed doors, the two griffins finally moved into the same stall.
“Seriously, how long have you known each other before getting this settled? And you’re still a royal griffin?” stroking Cake’s head, Charlotte chuckled, finding it amusing, “So lame!”
On the other side, the Golden-Winged Griffin was excitedly squawking, nearly jumping into Roy’s arms.
“Bro! I chose the right guy! From now on, I can hang out with Miss Cake every day!”
“Heh, no big deal. It’s what friends do for each other.”
“But…” Roy was curious, “how did you guys end up together?”
The last time he saw them, it was at the celebration banquet, and at that time, Cheese and Cake were far from being flirty. How did they suddenly cross the line?
“Oh, actually a few days ago, Miss Cake invited me out, saying it was mating season, and I looked so pitiful that she wanted to hang out with me…”
“But it’s not just hanging out! When it came to the real deal, Miss Cake revealed she really had feelings for me!”
The excited Golden-Winged Griffin squirmed around, buzzing with sparks all over its body.
This is wild… oh, I can relate, that’s fine.
Roy was happy for his bro’s romantic success, but as someone who had also experienced love, he couldn’t help but worry about a serious question.
“Getting to that point is great, but can you handle it?”
