Chapter 11: Performance
Sunlight filtered through the treetops, casting dappled shadows on the forest path. The air was filled with the scent of earth and leaves. In the distance, clear birdsong mingled with the babbling of a stream, creating nature’s melody. Under the bright sun, the girl and young boy walked together along the path.
Nia walked ahead with a lively gait, humming a soothing little tune, like a nightingale dancing in the woods, sometimes twirling, sometimes flapping her wings, and occasionally turning back with a smile brighter than the sun.
The dappled light blurred the image of the elven girl, making this scene seem somewhat surreal to Roy.
Unfortunately, Veszyra didn’t have a camera.
Roy felt this moment resembled a cover of some whimsical adventure story—any snapshot would make a perfect wallpaper.
Compared to Nia, Roy strolled much more leisurely.
For ordinary people, the forests near the Academy City, home to various magical beasts, still posed some danger.
But for Roy, it felt like a natural paradise.
The Lionheart Kingdom’s mountains were rugged, and the magical beasts were fearsome. A previous trip back had him running day and night, battling ferocious dragons.
But now, experiencing nature’s beauty without fear of a dragon swooping down felt like a relaxing outing.
However, Nia appeared even more cheerful than he was.
“Is it really necessary to be this excited? Haven’t you been here many times already?”
From what Roy knew, Nia frequently took on adventure quests to explore the forest. She probably knew every nook and cranny by now.
Nia raised her hands, balancing herself as she wobbled onto a little stone in the stream: “It’s different! I used to come alone, but today I’ve got you with me!”
The splashes of water under her boots sparkled like white crystals.
She waved her hand, signaling Roy to follow.
For a mid-tier Extraordinary Being, crossing this stream barely knee-deep would be easy even with eyes closed.
Roy recalled how, while hiding from dragon kin in the mountains, they had bravely traversed swamps that could drown a person.
But now, it was different.
Imitating Nia’s pose, Roy stepped on the little stones, crossing the river with her.
What should have been just a few minutes of experience ended with Nia looking as if she had accomplished some grand adventure upon reaching the other side.
She had always been one for outdoor excitement.
In truth, Roy preferred staying home.
Yet, being out with this lively elven girl made anyone appreciate the outside world.
“By the way, this quest is to hunt the Mist-Shadow Mantis, right?”
“I remember that’s a Sequence 5 beast, quite dangerous.”
Nia nodded: “Exactly.”
“But adventures are more thrilling with a bit of risk, aren’t they? It’d be pretty dull just to kill a few goblins.”
Wait, is there a possibility that during our date, we could just embrace peace and let these magical beasts be?
“Anyway, with me around, there’s nothing to fear.”
Roy wasn’t boasting.
Magical beasts weren’t that foolish.
With a Sage stationed in the Academy City, no idiotic magical beast dared to get too close.
The stronger the beast, the more attuned it was to danger. Therefore, the magical beasts residing here weren’t very strong and tended to avoid attracting the Sage’s attention.
Unlike the kingdom’s forests, where Sequence 5 beasts were common, lurking deep within were monsters as terrifying as dragons. The most formidable beasts of this generation were only around Sequence 5 in strength.
With his current abilities, he wouldn’t say it was effortless, but it wasn’t difficult either.
Yet, upon hearing this, Nia became displeased.
“Hey, don’t interfere.”
“If you take it out in one shot, won’t it be boring? A rare adventure should be more exciting, so let me handle it first.”
Nia raised her fair little arm, striking a pose like a fitness model, flexing nonexistent muscles: “Let me show you my strength!”
Actually, this was Nia’s real goal.
She wasn’t naïve enough to win over Roy just with her looks. Beauty was just the first step in dating.
In an adventurer’s date, showcasing her strength by easily and gracefully defeating magical beasts was her second step.
“Alright, alright.” Roy responded casually.
As long as he had her back, she could go wild on this adventure.
Soon, Nia encountered her first opportunity to shine.
A chilling roar and the shouts of adventurers echoed around them.
Without exchanging a word, Roy and Nia simultaneously held their breath, using the cover of foliage to approach the commotion.
They saw countless vines twisting and writhing, resembling a living forest, trapping a small team of over ten adventurers within.
Leading the group was a tree that stood over ten meters tall, as wide as several people bound together, with a human-like face displaying a cruel smile, exuding a pressure comparable to that of a pure-blood dragon.
Treants were the general term for tree-type magical beasts, some of which could take human form, while others, like this one, could only maintain their tree form.
But this treant was no ordinary creature.
Sequence 6 monsters in this forest ranked among the most powerful.
And the adventurers seemed lacking.
Most were between Sequence 8 and Sequence 9. The team leader wielded a thunder spear, struggling to fend off the storm of incoming vines, his once robust figure now drenched in blood.
Isn’t that Reid?
Did he jump into this mission without finding backup?
Roy inexplicably felt a bit sorry for him.
Just as he considered standing up, Nia pressed him back down.
Nia flicked her side ponytail and said confidently: “Hmph, don’t rush, leave this level of enemy to me.”
The advantage in strength between Sequence 5 and Sequence 6 was obvious.
Thus, Roy didn’t insist and instead gestured with an exaggerated flourish: “Please, start your performance.”
Another wave of vine strikes came.
No matter how sturdy the body, it could barely withstand impacts strong enough to overturn a cart. With a spray of blood, Reid was sent flying, losing his spear.
“Boss!”
“Hold on!”
“We can’t lose you!”
“Cough cough…”
Amidst his companions’ concern, Reid coughed blood, grasping one of their hands tightly, struggling to say: “Bro, if I don’t make it back…”
“Big bro!!!” His younger brothers were already in tears.
“You must burn whatever’s under my bed!”
Reid howled in pain.
Such parting words were rather humiliating, but he simply didn’t want any strange things to be found when someone sorted through his belongings after his death! Even the dead deserved a good reputation, right?!
“I’ll cover your retreat! Just focus on getting back alive and fulfilling our promise!”
As the dark vines surged again, Reid pushed everyone aside, raised his spear, and roared as he charged the formidable foe.
To the adventurers witnessing this, his figure seemed monumental, bringing each of them to tears.
Yet then, a whirlwind erupted.
The storm-like vines seemed feeble at that moment, as sharp sword light cut through the descending vegetation. For the first time, the massive treant displayed a pained expression and retreated.
In a billowing robe, the elven girl stood at the front, wielding dual swords, exuding a majestic aura.
Though there was a strange look on her face.
“So, Mr. Reid, just what do you have under your bed?”
At this moment, Reid fell silent. He would rather have just been struck dead by the treant.
