Chapter 12: Epic Fail at Showing Off
Reid selectively ignored Nia’s question and warned, “Be careful, that guy is really strong. You’re not going to handle it—”
The vines crashed down again, like thunder splitting the air, sending mud flying everywhere.
But Nia had already transformed into a gust of wind and zipped off to another spot.
Only then did Reid realize that their opponent was no longer Sequence 7 but a mid-tier Extraordinary Being capable of matching this giant treant!
The giant treant roared, summoning countless vines into two massive hands that swept through the area, whipping up a fierce wind. The ground heaved like a tide, and the terrifying force sent Reid and the others tumbling.
But that heavy strike couldn’t catch Nightingale’s fleeting shadow.
Nia had already ridden the wind up to the treant’s head.
Her mithril dual swords gleamed with icy light, sharp enough to slice through dragon scales, and now swirling with winds at high speed, they were undeniably razor-sharp.
The giant hands couldn’t save the treant; instead, they were smoothly severed like tofu, eliciting a hideous howl from the colossal creature as it writhed in pain.
Seeing the creature that nearly wiped them out couldn’t act so arrogantly anymore, the group of Adventurers couldn’t help but cheer.
“Nia, great job!”
“Take the chance! Finish it off!”
Nia didn’t mind the cheers boosting her spirits; in fact, she loved this lively atmosphere back when the Adventurers’ Guild was brawling.
But more than Reid and the others’ cheers, she cared about the gaze of a certain young boy.
What was so impressive about just killing a treant?
This was a rare opportunity; she wanted to look cool and show off as much as she could!
【Transforming Wind into Shadow】.
That was the ability Nia gained upon reaching Sequence 5, allowing her to morph into pure wind element, evading attacks. With this move, even a speedy opponent of Sequence 5 couldn’t gain the upper hand.
But what was the point?
Thinking this, Nia decided not to use 【Transforming Wind into Shadow】 again, relying instead on her agile movements to dodge the massive, stone-crushing strikes by mere inches.
No matter how infuriated the giant treant got or how fiercely it struck, it just couldn’t grasp the dancing silhouette among its vines, becoming nothing more than a punchline as swords repeatedly sliced through its tendrils, utterly humiliated.
While Reid could only passively take hits, Nia’s dazzling movements left every Adventurer present dumbfounded.
So flashy, so impressive!
This wasn’t even a life-or-death battle; it was just a show of talent!
A being of Sequence 6 could easily take on a thousand foes; monsters like the giant treant sometimes required local lords to rally armies just to contend with them. Yet here was this elven girl casually toying with it. Reid and the others had no doubt that even if she found herself in the midst of a cavalry charge, she’d handle it as effortlessly as she was now!
However, witnessing Nia’s grace, Roy in the corner let out a small sigh and stood up.
This girl was getting a bit too cocky.
The next moment, just as Nia continued to toy with her opponent, something unexpected happened.
The ground cracked open, and a wooden spike shot up from below.
Caught off guard, Nia quickly halted, leaning back to evade the sneaky attack, but in doing so, she exposed herself.
A vine swung, and Nia found herself ensnared at the ankle, dangling in midair like a caught fish.
“Yikes!!”
The giant treant wasn’t dumb.
It realized that its blow wouldn’t finish off the opponent, so it started spinning Nia around in the air, giving her a taste of flight that left her seeing stars.
Oh no, oh no, oh no! This is so embarrassing!
While wearing shorts would keep her from exposure in battle, the thought of being upside down like a carrot was driving Nia crazy.
But before Nia could draw her sword again, fiery embers ignited.
Accompanied by a somewhat ethereal yet profoundly shocking dragon’s roar, a blade engulfed in crimson flames shot up.
【Blaze Out】!
A torrent of terrifying flames erupted, converging into a straight line.
The Adventurers didn’t even have time to react before a thick slash of fire pierced through the treant’s massive wooden hand, consuming the entire giant creature.
Then all that remained was the acrid smell of burning and countless remnants, stark reminders of the treant’s existence and demise.
The forest monster that posed a threat to a thousand-strong army didn’t even get a chance to howl before being reduced to ashes.
The girl in midair fell down.
Nia instinctively shut her eyes, but instead of hitting the ground, she landed in a strong embrace.
Roy arrived just in time, catching Nia as if she were a princess.
Nia was first elated, but then pouted, “I could’ve handled it myself!”
“I know, Sequence 6 has an advantage over Sequence 5,” Roy admitted.
“But why didn’t you go all out? If you’d started strong, you could’ve finished it off easily.”
Faced with Roy’s teasing, Nia shrank her neck and couldn’t lift her head, even her slender pointed ears drooping in defeat.
Damn it, is there anything more embarrassing than failing to show off in front of your crush?! Nia seriously wanted to find a hole to crawl into.
But that wasn’t realistic, so she continued to burrow into Roy’s embrace.
“I just wanted to show off a bit…”
“That’s not an excuse for being reckless,” Roy retorted mercilessly, giving her ear a pinch for punishment.
Elven ears were particularly sensitive.
Originally, Nia had wanted to argue, but she melted under the sudden softness, her cheeks turning crimson, the blush spreading deep into her neck as she whimpered, “I-I know, okay?”
The feel of her soft ear was strangely addictive, and her tearful expression was undeniably cute.
If he did this at any other time, he’d get bullied by Nia in response, but taking advantage of the moment, Roy enjoyed fiddling with her ear while continuing to lecture with a tone that seemed like a mantra: “I know you want to impress, but safety comes first. There are countless paths, safety is the top priority. Being careless in adventures, loved ones in tears, underestimating monsters leads to tremendous losses…”
“I said I know, I know! Stop pinching my ear!” Nia couldn’t help but squirm in his arms, on the verge of tears.
That evening.
Roy and the others set up camp nearby, conveniently pairing up with Reid and his group for support.
Reid and the others were injured and needed to rest a bit; otherwise, they couldn’t continue their mission.
Besides, Nia’s task wasn’t urgent; the 【Fog-Mantled Mantis】 wouldn’t be running away, so Roy didn’t mind taking care of a few familiar faces.
However, Reid and the others seemed rather uneasy.
In front of the campfire, the rowdy Adventurers who usually filled the air with noise were as serious as school kids in front of a teacher, making Roy feel a bit awkward.
Holding the precious holy water Roy had gifted, Reid, whose wounds were bandaged, spoke very formally.
“Ms. Nia, and Lord Roy… Thank you so much for your assistance this time. Otherwise, we would have surely been done for.”
