Chapter 13: Why Don’t You Sleep with Me
Reid offered an awkward smile, devoid of his usual entourage.
If his admiration for Nia was filled with wonder, his feelings towards Roy were more about respect.
And who could blame him?
Adventurers are carefree but also adhere to a strict hierarchy. They may disrespect nobility and scorn authority, but they can’t help but respect strength.
A Saint’s guard, the number one prodigy of the Western Continent, the Dragon Slayer of Lionheart—beneath these impressive titles, what mattered most was the undeniable power of the young boy.
Rank 4, high-tier Extraordinary Being.
In the Adventurers’ Guild, there were hardly more than a couple of such individuals, making him a figure that all adventurers worshipped.
Just recently, those young ones had been reliant on their supervision, yet within a year they had ascended to such heights that Reid and his companions found it hard to adjust.
The skewers of meat sizzling on the makeshift grill exuded a mouthwatering aroma, yet in front of such a high-tier Extraordinary Being, everyone felt too timid to feast as they usually would. The grown men sat as upright as well-mannered young ladies, causing Roy to chuckle.
Nia, however, showed no restraint and was devouring the best piece of meat; she chomped down like it was nobody’s business.
“Just a little help, no need to thank me. By the way, I have something I’d like to ask Mr. Reid.”
“Please, go ahead.”
Glancing at the nervous Reid, Roy pretended to ponder: “So, what exactly is under your bed?”
Reid’s face went blank, his mouth agape and speechless, confusion replacing his initial anxiety.
The other adventurers might have refrained from laughing, but the moment the elven girl couldn’t hold back her giggles, they all burst into hearty laughter.
“Laughing is off-limits!”
“You all can’t manage to offend them, huh? Is that it?”
After a couple of belly laughs, the chuckling by the campfire finally settled down, though Reid’s expression remained awkward; the atmosphere had lightened a lot compared to before.
Roy didn’t mind being admired.
But that depended on the situation.
Even with friends he only greeted with a nod, a sense of distance could make him uncomfortable.
Roy suddenly understood why Charlotte and the others looked so exhausted after a day of busyness. King Robert of Lionheart probably felt the same way.
Maintaining the demeanor of someone in high status was no easy task. Unless necessary, Roy preferred to interact with friends on more equal ground.
“Although I’ve made some achievements, I’m still the same me; you all don’t need to be so formal,” he said, reaching out to grab the half-eaten skewer from Nia’s hand and taking a large bite.
Nia: “?”
He had to admit, Nia’s taste in food was spot on; the skewer had the perfect mix of fat and lean meat, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside—it was indeed delicious.
“A little achievement… Pfft, you’re quite the jokester! Dragon-slaying is something every adventurer dreams of accomplishing.”
While they hadn’t fully let loose, Reid and the others felt a bit more relaxed and picked up their skewers, showing less restraint and more admiration.
“Unlike you guys, we little adventurers can only scratch out a living here in Academy City, and even that almost went wrong. Thanks to running into you all, we’re lucky to still be alive.”
Roy was curious: “What’s your task?”
“Kill the Fog Concealing Mantis.” Reid sighed with a wry smile.
Sometimes different teams of adventurers found themselves overlapping on the same quest.
But the Fog Concealing Mantis was a strong magical beast of rank 5, clearly beyond what Reid and his crew could handle.
They were seasoned adventurers who knew their limits—one shouldn’t venture deep into the forest to tackle enemies they couldn’t manage.
“Hey, don’t look at me like that; we had no choice!”
“Recently, the Green Parliament has been recruiting adventurers like crazy for some sort of mission to explore a secret realm or something, leaving Academy City short on manpower.” Reid swallowed a big piece of meat and continued, “The Fog Concealing Mantis, if left alone, will expand its territory, posing a threat to nearby areas.”
“At first, we just planned to scout the route, but who would have expected we’d run into problems right after entering the forest?”
The secret realm of the Green Parliament? What kind of realm could attract so many adventurers that Academy City’s resources ran dry?
Roy wanted to ask Nia about it, but seeing her munching on a piece of meat with a clear but silly expression, he held his tongue.
“What’s up?”
“Nothing, just eat.” Roy replied in a tone meant for a pet.
If Nia really knew the details, she wouldn’t be able to keep her mind from joining the discussion.
“By the way, you guys aren’t here for the Fog Concealing Mantis, are you?”
Roy nodded: “It’s indeed the case.”
“But the Academy hasn’t had any assessments recently, and you’re not short on money…”
Glancing at the closeness of the young boy and girl sitting shoulder to shoulder, Reid suddenly realized, wearing a knowing expression.
To outsiders, it might be hard to grasp, but for adventurers, this was dating.
Going on adventures seeking romance amid danger and thrill; not every adventurer was lucky enough to find their other half, even if every one of them thought the same.
“In that case, we won’t disturb you two. We’ll stand watch tonight; you both should go get some rest.”
“Come on, you’re joking! They are high-tier Extraordinary Beings; they don’t need us to stand watch… uh!”
“Shut it, you goof! They saved us and you want to put the burden of standing watch on them? Have a bit of sense!”
In the end, Reid shot Roy a “You got this!” look, leaving Roy utterly confused.
So, after a whirlwind of dinner, Roy and Nia were hastily pushed together.
The adventurers had set up their tents a bit further away, and he could faintly see the firelight.
Roy initially intended to rely on the protection of the Blood Clan and stand watch himself, but with Reid’s antics, he now felt flustered.
Nia, however, was nonchalant, kicking off her boots first and diving into the tent.
A few seconds later, her head poked out, “Why are you standing there? Come in!”
“Forget it. I don’t feel safe relying solely on them; I’ll feel more secure being here myself.”
Nia scoffed at this: “Oh please, what monster around here could threaten you? You wouldn’t wake up even if it tried.”
“With Reid and the others keeping watch, it’s already more than enough!”
“And wasn’t it agreed that you’d keep me company?” Nia puffed up her cheeks, looking like a little bird ready to take flight.
“Are you really that eager for me to sleep with you?” Roy joked.
But at that moment, her green eyes deepened, and Nia’s smile turned a bit frosty: “Yeah.”
“Why sleep with her when you’re already sleeping with them?”
“!”
A jolt ran through Roy, and he stopped arguing, diving straight into the tent.
Honestly, with all the noise at night recently, Roy never thought he could keep it hidden forever. But the moment she pointed it out, he felt a pang of unease.
