Chapter 25: The Stalker
“We have the kind of relationship you think we do!”
After saying this with a smile, Nia’s expression turned dangerous, like a blade being unsheathed. “So if anyone dares to disturb us, don’t blame me for being rude!”
The large Adventurers’ Guild became so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
From the perspective of either the Nightingale of the Verdant Court or the Elven Girl Adventurers, it was enough to attract numerous adventurers to them. When they saw her return with a strange man, some of them couldn’t help but imagine charging in to ‘rescue’ the beautiful girl from the clutches of a scoundrel.
However, Nia’s cold smirk ruthlessly shattered their delusions.
She was sincere. Realizing this, even those who were reluctant no longer sought to draw attention to themselves.
“Sigh, I told you to keep a low profile.” Natasha sighed in exasperation.
Nia stuck out her tongue in a guilty manner. “Come on, you know these guys. If I don’t say it like this, someone will definitely try to pick a fight with Roy.”
“I’m more curious about what you did to make them so afraid of you,” Roy pointed out the blind spot.
“Ahem, how could I possibly be out here without any skills? There are plenty of adventurers who are both dirty and particularly brutish, but up till now, no one has ever laid a finger on me!” Nia lifted her side ponytail, boasting with pride.
Then Natasha ruthlessly popped her balloon. “Do you need me to tell you how much money you’ve cost me every time you two get into a brawl?”
Feeling ashamed, Nia immediately tried to change the subject.
“Chic! Any interesting gossip lately~”
A bartender was called over, smiling politely. “Well, the most interesting topic right now… has to be the Everdark Forest, I guess?”
Roy, who was sipping tea, paused slightly.
Everdark Forest?
He remembered Reid mentioning before that they were short on hands over there, necessitating many adventurers from the Academy City to be sent there.
This was very unusual.
You see, when it came to the number of adventurers, the Verdant Court was second only to the Academy City.
There was no better place than the Adventurers’ Guild to gather intel, so Roy casually asked, “Can you elaborate?”
Bartender Chic noticed Roy wasn’t a local adventurer, so he began explaining from scratch: “Everdark Forest is a region deep within the Elven Forest, and it’s one of the few dangerous areas outside the jurisdiction of the Verdant Court.”
“The magical beasts there are exceptionally fierce, and the vegetation has undergone severe mutations, making it so that sunlight could hardly penetrate; hence, the name Everdark Forest. It’s said to be the place where the first Elven Empress met her end, and her sorrow tainted that forest. Throughout history, many adventurers have coveted the treasures of the Elven Empress, but no one has ever returned alive from Everdark Forest.”
How ominous…
Both Nia and Natasha seemed rather unfazed by the legend. Clearly, they regarded it as mere folklore.
“Bahamut, do you know anything about the first Elven Empress?” Out of curiosity, Roy asked the resident expert from that era.
“When I was in slumber, the Elven clan seemed to have been in some kind of crisis and had already hidden themselves for a long time. But to be truthful, I believe that Empress should have been the most likely presence to continue from the First Era; with her power of life, she should have been able to ensure her clan’s safety, if not live for over ten thousand years.”
Bahamut’s voice in Roy’s mind held a tone of melancholy.
“At the end of the day, it’s all just stories,” Natasha remarked casually.
But the bartender Chic was far from finished. “I used to think that too, but recently, a massive migration of magical beasts from Everdark Forest has been reported. Supposedly, these beasts carry some artifacts from the First Era!”
“The regrets concerning the Elven Empress might actually be real! Otherwise, why would the Verdant Court and the Guild Headquarters mobilize so many people at the first opportunity? Big Sister, how about you go take a look too? You might find something good!”
Roy was beginning to understand.
So it wasn’t that the Verdant Court was facing some troubles; they were going to explore Everdark Forest for legacies from the First Era.
As the False King, Roy could completely understand the people’s yearning for the power of myths.
“Enough. After being retired for so many years, I’m no longer nimble.” Natasha waved her hand, entirely uninterested.
It seemed that Natasha had been a renowned adventurer in her youth, and she still possessed a rank five ability. Previously, under Nia’s commission, she had confronted the Sword Saint alongside Karl and others, making her stronger than most adventurers Roy had encountered.
But everyone has their own desires; she had no intention of making a comeback, and Roy certainly wouldn’t meddle.
Instead, it was Nia who was already wide-eyed with excitement.
As soon as she opened her mouth, Roy and Natasha spoke simultaneously, “No way! *2”
“Hey, we haven’t said anything yet!”
It’s just that she wanted to go out and have an adventure again, right?!
“Have you forgotten? Not to mention how dangerous Everdark Forest is, All Things Wither is still after you. Besides the Emerald City, nowhere else is safe for you.” Natasha warned.
“Come on, staying here and relaxing isn’t too bad!” Roy gently pinched the girl’s cheek, coaxing her softly.
“That’s true.”
Who knows if the stick would be useful, but the jujube really hit the spot for Nia.
Resting her head on Roy’s shoulder, Nia quickly let go of her obsession with Everdark Forest.
After breakfast, Roy followed Nia to explore Emerald City. It was also to keep her entertained and prevent her from developing any unnecessary interest in Everdark Forest.
Unlike the revered princess, Nia interacted with the residents more naturally, laughing and greeting everyone along the way, earning warm morning wishes as if she were a beloved neighbor.
Especially when they reached the commercial district, she received generous offerings from the townsfolk.
Thank goodness Roy was now a high-level Extraordinary Being, or else his stomach would really struggle to keep up with Nia, who seemed to have an endless appetite.
Having someone to guide you makes a difference.
In just one day, Roy and Nia explored all the sights of Emerald City, coming away quite satisfied.
Of course, there were also some ‘gifts’ Roy would rather do without.
“…Why did you buy this kind of outfit?” Roy said, holding up a pair of tropical grass skirts with a look of disbelief.
He did not want to cosplay Tarzan!
“Weren’t you the one who said you wanted traditional attire of the elven descendants?”
“Who are you trying to fool?! Ordinary people don’t wear this stuff! This tradition must be from the Stone Age!!”
“It’s fine! With your figure, Miss Nia would definitely love it!” a familiar shop assistant joked, hiding a smile.
Nia pointed at Roy, laughing without mercy. “Hahaha, how great! They’re complimenting your figure!”
“By the way, it’s a rare opportunity, so why not buy one for Miss Nia too while we’re at it?”
The friendly fire hit Nia like a ton of bricks, freezing her smile instantly.
Before she could react, Roy quickly agreed, “Makes sense. After all, her figure is nice too.”
With a grass skirt in hand, Nia exclaimed awkwardly, “What are you joking about?! There’s no way I could wear something like this!”
Just as Nia was feeling frustrated, Roy suddenly pulled her into a narrow alley between treehouses, pinning her against the wall.
“Wait, wait! Can we backtrack and let you wear it later? Wearing this in public is too embarrassing; I don’t want everyone gawking at me!”
“…What do you take me for?”
Roy’s gaze turned sharp as he looked into the distance. “Didn’t you notice? Someone is following us.”
