Chapter 93: The Reverse Scale
“This is…!”
Eighteen years ago, in the Second Dragon War, the dragons brought disaster upon the kingdom and were truly the kingdom’s deadliest foes.
Logically, anything related to dragons should be banned, and possessing such items could even be deemed as belonging to a Cult.
But here was a Marquis presenting this kind of thing before the king, leaving Roy feeling like he was in some sort of surreal scene.
However, as the saying goes, everything can be put to use. The bones of dragons are top-tier Extraordinary Material, worth a fortune during times of war.
“Is this some sort of trophy from your battles back in the day, Father?” Roy asked curiously.
Karl noticed his doubtful expression and patiently explained, “Not all dragons are enemies of humanity.”
“This isn’t from the Second Dragon War, but from the first.”
“The first?!?” Roy was startled once more, his heart racing like it was on a rollercoaster again.
Unlike the well-known Second Dragon War, the history of the First Dragon War is ancient, tracing back to the First Era, a time when the Lionheart Kingdom didn’t even exist.
Legend has it that this was humanity’s first challenge to the mythical races, and many historians are skeptical about this war. But to honor human bravery, it has been revered as the “First.”
This was not just a challenge to dragons, but to Extraordinary Beings, mythical races, and ancient demigods!
When Roy took the wooden box from Karl, it felt incredibly heavy, as if it carried the weight of human history since the First Era.
Upon opening the box, he found a dark golden scale inside.
The scale, though a lifeless object, emitted a heavy pressure that instantly made the air feel solemn, as if an ancient dragon were crossing through time, trembling before the small mortals.
【Warning: Ancient demigod medium detected! Would you like to consume a life-point to activate it?】
Roy suddenly understood.
So this life-point is meant for this thing!
The power of this ancient demigod medium was definitely beyond any Extraordinary Item Roy knew of, even more so than the relics from the ancient civilizations in the favor-point shop!
Karl gazed at Roy with a serious expression, his tone laced with nostalgia and sentiment: “This is the dragon’s reverse scale, a treasure left to you by your mother. I don’t know exactly what it can do, but I understand what your mother meant — Extraordinary Beings must bear responsibilities far exceeding those of ordinary humans. If you didn’t have sufficient ability, I would never have given it to you.”
“But as a noble, as an Extraordinary Being, and as a man, you’ve proven yourself.” At this point, Karl’s tone softened, still carrying some worry, but mostly pride.
“Your old man is right; anyone who can tame a Golden-Winged Griffin surely deserves to inherit something entrusted by Rowlin.” Rob chuckled, raising his chin and stroking his beard, commenting with arrogance.
But the next second he widened his eyes like a lion about to pounce: “But I warn you! I haven’t approved of your business with Charlotte yet!”
“What business?” Roy feigned ignorance.
Karl chuckled and smoothed things over: “Don’t worry, this kid knows what he’s doing.”
The Lionheart King was momentarily taken aback, then let out a rough grunt, neither agreeing nor objecting.
For a doting father, this might not count as approval, but it was certainly a kind of tacit acknowledgment.
“I’m heading out with Rob tonight, so I won’t be staying with you. You need to return early tomorrow to oversee the territory,” Karl instructed.
Roy nodded in acknowledgment.
The territory was in chaos and required immediate leadership; with Karl away, it was up to him to hold everything together.
Suddenly, Karl glanced towards the door and said with a smile, “Rob and I still have some things to discuss; take this opportunity to say goodbye to Her Highness.”
Roy understood, waved goodbye to Rob, and headed outside.
The moment the door opened, just as he had expected, he was greeted by a bright, summer-like crimson.
Charlotte crossed her arms, caught by surprise and quickly averted her gaze, pretending to casually walk past. Roy couldn’t help but laugh.
“Sorry to keep you waiting.”
“I didn’t! I was just passing by to take a look!”
Charlotte’s breathing was steady, but the subtle rise and fall of her chest, along with her flitting gaze, had already given her away.
“Could it be that you ran over just to see me? How eager!” Roy teased with a light-hearted tone.
Charlotte immediately raised her eyebrows, pouting her fists in mock anger: “Who wanted to see you! I said I just happened to pass by!”
But halfway through, her expression dimmed, and her fists drooped weakly: “After all, you’re leaving soon…”
With trouble at their family territory and the head of the family absent, he, as the heir, had to return to oversee things.
This was a responsibility Roy could not shirk.
“That said, it’s not like we won’t see each other again,” Roy joked cheerily, stepping in front of Charlotte and glancing at the meeting room: “There’s still time—how about we stroll for a bit longer?”
At this, Charlotte’s face lit up again: “Okay!”
“Since I’m not busy anyway, I might as well keep you company for a bit!”
“Your griffin still lacks a name, right? Perfect timing, let’s go register it!”
Charlotte straightened up, excitedly leading Roy along.
They were supposed to name the griffin at last night’s banquet, but after everything that happened, Roy never got the chance.
Still, he had a name in mind for his Golden-Winged Griffin.
The griffin’s housing area was in one corner of the Sunset Red Castle.
Though it was called a housing area, it was more akin to a small castle built of stone and wood.
As they entered, two rows of spacious stalls came into view, each wide enough for a three-meter-long griffin to roll around in.
Roy’s Golden-Winged Griffin was placed at the very end, directly opposite Charlotte’s royal griffin, Cake.
Cake was napping, while Roy’s griffin gazed dreamily at it, looking completely smitten.
Originally, he thought this creature might complain about the housing area, but it seemed he was worrying too much.
It wasn’t until Roy coughed a couple of times that the griffin turned its head, puffing a few sounds.
Roy wanted to gossip about the griffin’s progress with Cake, but thinking about making a griffin screech in front of Charlotte felt highly embarrassing.
Since Charlotte was too drunk to ask about it last night, if she brought it up today, Roy wouldn’t have a good response.
It would be like telling someone you can talk to cats, only to be ridiculed for an entire year.
A young official responsible for registering griffin names came over, saluted, and asked, “Mr. Roy, what name would you like to give your griffin?”
He glanced at the Golden-Winged Griffin, unable to hide his excitement and admiration in his eyes.
“The name of a mount will be recorded in the family tree for future generations, so think of something nice!” Charlotte, being a seasoned one, solemnly advised.
The griffin seemed to sense what was needed too, shouting from the side: “Give my bro a cool name! Something that suggests we’ve got a bit of a couple vibe with this pretty lady!”
Actually, Roy already had an idea.
Nobles typically named their griffins with names like Flamewing or Graywind, those super flashy and awesome names.
Knights usually named their mounts in that style; they sound tough.
But with so many similar names, those had become cliché.
Roy wanted to give his mount a name that was low-key yet luxurious and meaningful, one that would stand out in the family tree and historical records, looking elegant at first glance!
He pondered for a moment, then calmly uttered the name he had already decided on: “Knowledge!”
