The day after Kario’s bodyguard joined us.
As scheduled, Albert Kario visited a barbershop he had frequented for years. It was located on the first floor of the Park Sheraton Hotel.
I couldn’t believe he was going out after what my wolves had just done.
“Is he fearless, or has he let his guard down?”
“Probably just stupid.”
While Sarina and I exchanged brief words, Kario finished his haircut in the fourth chair from the left where he always sat. The barber leaned the boss’s chair back.
He then placed a hot towel over the boss’s face and began preparing for the shave.
At that moment.
Kario’s bodyguard left with other guards, and since the boss’s face was covered with the hot towel, he didn’t notice the shift. The barber was too focused on the shave preparation to care about what they were doing.
His only client was Albert Kario.
“….”
The bodyguard and his men walked down the hotel corridor toward us. The bulky bodyguard glanced at Sarina and me, giving a slight nod—a signal that everything was ready.
I tilted my hat down a bit more.
“Let’s go.”
“Okay.”
Sarina and I crossed paths with Kario’s bodyguards. We didn’t run, but we kept a brisk pace into the barbershop.
“….”
Quietly opening the door to go inside, Sarina motioned for the barber and other staff to step aside. In our hands, we gripped .38 caliber handguns.
There was no need to call out Kario or provoke him unnecessarily.
Sarina and I stood quietly on either side of the reclining Kario.
Just as the first bullet was about to pierce Kario’s chest, he suddenly opened his eyes wide and shot up from his seat.
Did he sense the impending doom?
“You! You bastard!”
Before he could fully stand, Sarina and I had pumped him with more than five rounds. In the meantime, Kario thrashed about like a beast, roaring as if his arms could shield him from the bullets.
But the conclusion he met was truly miserable.
“You fool.”
By the time Sarina spoke, Kario had already face-planted on the barbershop floor, a lifeless body.
No, that’s not accurate. He wasn’t quite dead yet. I acted as I had seen my father do when executing enemies.
I pressed the .38 caliber handgun tightly against the back of Kario’s head and pulled the trigger. It was a confirmation shot.
Thus, Albert Kario became a corpse.
The new boss of the Kario Family was the bodyguard who had cooperated with us.
“Don Felini, I pledge my loyalty to you.”
“No, I’m just an agent.”
The new boss of the Alini Family—now taking Kario’s place—Antonio Alini, bowed and kissed my ring.
It was a true pledge of loyalty.
As I had said, I wasn’t the boss. I was merely in the position of underboss, serving as the boss’s agent.
With that, Beverly South fell under our influence.
Of course, not everyone in the Alini Family agreed without protest.
“Sarina, I’ll leave those guys to you.”
“Yes, leave it to me. I’ll handle it properly.”
Sarina asserted that she would not disappoint me. Thus, she and her pack of wolves began cleaning up the dangerous individuals pointed out by Alini.
A few days later, Armo and Lumini’s mission in Hayden Park was much easier than my direct foray into Beverly.
“So, how’s it looking over there?”
“Mr. Luke, they say they’re willing to surrender.”
“What? Without even putting up a fight?”
Hayden Park South was firmly held by a Dwarf Gang. I couldn’t believe they were the ones to throw out the white flag. Was it wisdom or just cowardice? I couldn’t quite tell.
“It seems they got scared after hearing about what happened to Kario.”
Both wise and cowardly. There might be something unsettling about it, but what mattered was how quickly we had tidied up Beverly South and Hayden Park South.
Having secured two footholds, I planned to support Giovanni, Viola, and Carini, who were attacking the Russo Family.
“Kambara.”
“Yes?”
“Relay to the Alini Family and the Dwarfs to gather their forces because we’re attacking the Russo Family.”
I needed to ensure their strength was kept on the battlefield.
Plus, witnessing the wolves’ operations up close would surely extinguish any rebellious thoughts they might have.
“Yes, I’ll contact them right away.”
“And tell the other caporegimes. We’re about to hit Russo.”
Giovanni’s side had already begun assaulting the Russo Family. Haywoods was our first target.
*
While I and the other caporegimes were establishing footholds in the northeastern part of the city, Giovanni and the other two caporegimes quickly pushed against Haywoods.
“Fire! Just shoot it all!”
Chases and shootouts began across the roads of Haywoods.
Giovanni was already in a car with other wolves, chasing after the Russo Family members.
Many were pulling triggers on the roads and streets, as sparks flew and a hail of bullets rained down. The sounds of metal cutting through air, piercing flesh.
In the face of the sudden attack, the Russo Family, along with the Vampires and Dwarfs, were quickly piling up bodies.
“How about we wait for Mr. Luke here?”
“No, at least we need to take Haywood Central.”
Giovanni responded more actively to Viola’s cautious opinion. He thought that as his brother, Luke Felini, would expect no less than that.
“The damage won’t be small.”
“Well, it’s war. Of course.”
Giovanni grimaced at Carini’s remark. The total force combined was nearly 300, and it felt like they were thinking of playing a children’s game.
“Then let’s hit the weakly defended spots first.”
Viola aimed to maximize the information she had. Both Giovanni and Carini had no objections to this.
However, the Russo Family’s resistance was stronger than anticipated.
Dwarf snipers positioned around various buildings in Haywoods.
At night, the Vampires would come swooping down from the sky.
Casualties were starting to emerge not just from Carini and Viola’s followers, but also from Giovanni’s pack of wolves.
“Let’s cut it off here.”
“What do you mean?”
“I think it’s best to hold our current position. It seems like Mr. Luke has wrapped things up in Beverly and Hayden Park, so let’s wait a bit.”
“It sounds like a good approach.”
Carini nodded in agreement with Viola’s suggestion. Though he was a former boxer who never shunned confrontations, the situation had changed.
“…Damn it.”
Giovanni reluctantly accepted Viola’s and Carini’s opinions.
Viola was merely acting as an advisor, so Giovanni had the final say among the three caporegimes.
Of course, it wasn’t impossible to win against the Russo Family members stationed throughout Haywoods. The problem was that even if they won, significant losses were to be expected.
The situation in Haywoods was reported to me.
I left Kambara with about ten Gollymen in Beverly South, and some of Lumini’s subordinates remained in Hayden Park South.
After all, the defense of that area was managed by the Alini Family and the Dwarf Gang, and the ones I left behind were there for oversight.
I redirected all the troops deployed to secure the footholds in both locations back to Haywoods.
Sarina, Armo, Lumini, and I joined up with Giovanni, Viola, and Carini. The meeting place was a bar located south of Haywoods.
“Brother.”
“Giovanni, good work.”
I couldn’t help but hug Giovanni as soon as I met him, expressing my appreciation for his hard work.
“Not pushing further was the right call.”
“Yes, the other two felt the same way.”
Giovanni shifted the focus of credit to Viola and Carini. I left the battlefield of Haywoods in their hands.
I figured these two could manage all these forces without any issue.
“Viola, I’ll rely on you just as you’ve done until now.”
“Yes, I’ve already got ideas about where to strike once reinforcements arrive.”
“That’s good to hear.”
Fortunately, Viola seemed satisfied with her role.
“But if Giovanni and I are in command, what will Luke do?”
“I’ve got other work to do.”
Sarina and I, along with my pack of wolves, were planning to pull out of the war against the Russo Family.
Even if we withdrew, the reinforcements coming in were substantial, so I didn’t think this gap would determine the outcome of the war.
However, as the situation in the city center had stalled, Sarina and I needed to pave the way for Elena.
Naturally, there was no need to explain this reason to all the caporegimes. It was sufficient to share it with just Giovanni, Sarina, and Armo.
“Ah, Giovanni. One last thing.”
“Yes?”
“Make sure to capture Granada alive.”
“That crazy bomb enthusiast?”
“He’s quite useful.”
When Sarina asked this in place of Giovanni, I provided my reasoning. Yet the two’s expressions were like, “Really, again?”
Yeah, truthfully, my desire for that Dwarf Vampire bomb enthusiast stemmed from my collector’s instincts.
Precisely, it was about collecting talent.
“Of course, if it seems too costly, just take him out.”
“Understood, I’ll do my best if possible.”
Both Giovanni and Sarina reacted nonchalantly, as this wasn’t the first time such a request had arisen.
And so, as we progressed south from Haywoods to the city center, a man from the Russo Family directly sought out Giovanni and Sarina.
It was none other than Darius Russo’s younger brother, Damar Russo.
