“Before I close the Gate, I’ll turn you both to ash.”
Hero Zion declared calmly, aiming the Holy Sword at the Demon King.
But soon, the message from Hanamana echoed in his mind.
[It’s a good mindset, but Zion, please close the Gate whenever you get the chance during combat.]
Since the entire party was connected through the psychic magic, they could exchange messages like this without being noticed.
Unlike the Demon King and Aurora, who focused on defense and evasion, the Gate was stationary, making it an easy target.
Moreover, the Demon King, constrained by various limitations in the human realm, could not maintain his existence here without the Gate.
Therefore, the conquest of the Demon King was essentially a type of capture-the-flag, penetrating through the Demon King’s defenses to strike the Gate.
Zion, having already experienced closing the Gate once, obviously knew this,
[I know.]
The reply came immediately.
– Pith
In an instant, Zion vanished before their eyes.
– clang!!
And Zion reappeared with a sharp metallic sound, having lightly parried the Demon King’s assault.
With that as the signal, the Hero party’s assault on the Demon King began anew.
[I’ll leave the Demon King to Zion. We need to deal with pesky Aurora first. Hanamana and I will bombard her, Hop will provide spatial counter, and Serin will hide and support from behind.]
After all acknowledging the order transmitted through the psychic connection, everyone took on their roles.
“Invisibility.”
First, Serin stepped back to conceal herself. Hidden in the darkness, she would cover Zion in times of crisis or seize an opportunity against Aurora.
“Elemental Arrow Cycling.”
And then, Naoto launched the bombardment.
Naoto formed a bow in her right hand, aiming directly at Aurora, while a barrage of arrows with various attributes was shot out without even drawing the string.
“Severance.”
“Connection, enhance spatial density.”
Aurora attempted to enforce spatial defense but was immediately thwarted.
My role was to nullify any action that Aurora took to manipulate space.
“Tch, Shield.”
As her space defense was disrupted, Aurora unfolded her shield, trying to engage in a tug-of-war with magic power.
The efficiency of defensive magic covering all attributes was generally poor, so it was originally not a great decision, yet Aurora was a great mage who lived for over 500 years.
With the Gate turned away, she seemed to be attempting to draw out a war of attrition.
Various elemental explosions began to cover the surface of the shield.
And in that opening, Hanamana seized a magical arrow formed by her magic.
“Lord of Creation. Grant your power to pierce through all worlds against the enemy crafted by you.”
Hanamana infused an incantation into the white thunderous arrow.
She held it as if it were a spear, raised it over her shoulder, and then hurled it into the mass of arrows Naoto was unleashing, as if it were an electric arrow.
A sacred arrow infused with a prayer for piercing. If it struck the demons directly, it would naturally deal a fatal blow,
“Do you think I’d fall for the same trick as before?”
Having already experienced their coordination, Aurora wouldn’t be easily caught.
“Fly.”
She took to the air with her shield, evading Hanamana’s attack.
“Dark Thunder.”
Maintaining her shield and flight, she unleashed a magical attack.
As expected from the Chief of the Demons, Aurora made triple casting seem effortless.
Furthermore, she targeted all three of us.
But since we were tightly clustered together,
“Sanctuary.”
Hanamana countered and blocked it.
Holy light erupted from the ground, forming a domain, and the black bolts descending from the sky gradually thinned out and disappeared within the sanctuary.
“A 200-year-old Elf Cleric, truly, there’s a bit of everything!”
“D-Don’t mention my age!”
Aurora snapped irritably as the attack was thwarted.
Considering that the elf was wielding significantly more magic than a human, using sacred magic must feel like a nightmare for demons.
Furthermore, Hanamana’s domain provided buffs to allies, intensifying Naoto’s bombardment.
Still, despite looking somewhat pressured, Aurora was holding her ground against elemental magic.
Additionally, she spread her wings and soared high into the sky, reaching a height where the arrows couldn’t reach her.
“That height is out of reach. I could reach it if I flew, but…”
“Don’t do that, Naoto.”
“I know.”
An approach like that, raining down magic lunacy, was a task beyond human capabilities.
Aurora kept trying to drag the battle into a war of attrition, leveraging her magic advantage.
No matter how capable she was, it wouldn’t be easy to seize the initiative against two hero-level opponents being marked by spatial magic.
“Being too far reduces attack efficiency, which goes both ways, so let’s help Zion. As long as this domain holds, Aurora’s bombardment will be pointless.”
“Alright. Then Hop will mark Aurora, and we’ll cover Zion. Let’s create an opening to strike the Gate…”
“No, Naoto. She’s coming now.”
“What?”
While we reorganized and discussed briefly, Aurora came diving down rapidly using her wings.
With a barrier of black magic, she clenched her fist tightly.
“I think I understand her thoughts.”
Hanamana pulled out her beloved ancient wooden staff that was left to stand firm at the center of the domain.
“Lord of Creation, your creation asks for power.”
Aurora was almost on the ground.
What she cast was none other than,
“Crack!”
– Bang!
She slammed her fist down onto the earth, creating a rift as a target.
An attempt to split apart Hanamana’s domain with high-level dark magic aimed at the very ground.
“To replicate the perfect form of all creatures captured in an ideal world here.”
The rift dangerously approached, threatening to tear apart the domain.
But,
“Idea Sanctuary.”
That rift was unable to enter Hanamana’s domain.
Moreover,
“Extend Sanctuary.”
Hanamana continued to expand her domain.
As the area widened, the already cleft ground began to heal, and the domain pressed more against Aurora.
“Dark Sanctuary.”
In response, Aurora cast the same sanctification from her fist struck against the ground.
But we weren’t about to let that be.
“Did you just tear the ground apart? Magma Strike.”
– Boom!!
As Naoto cast magic towards the cracked earth, burning earth fragments erupted from the fissure and overwhelmed Aurora.
“Cough!”
Aurora drew her hand off the ground, retreating slightly.
We were almost there, with the situation becoming increasingly favorable.
“I’ll draw her into the domain and purify her.”
“Entangle Roots.”
This time thick tree roots burst from the fissured ground, wrapping around Aurora.
“Life Drain.”
In response, Aurora immediately countered.
The roots withered away rapidly, recovering the damage and freeing her from the bindings, but in that brief moment, Hanamana’s sanctuary was approaching her feet.
If she captured Aurora like this, then what was next…
“Stop.”
– Clang!
Suddenly, a voice like a noisy machine voice broke in with a sword on the ground.
The Demon Sword stuck directly beneath Aurora, who had been hurriedly retreating.
Hanamana’s domain was now stunted by that sword.
“I apologize, Princess.”
And there was Serin, quietly retreating behind Hanamana.
She had entered the sanctuary with serious injuries, healing herself within.
Thinking back, there had been several chances for Serin to ambush Aurora, yet she never seized the opportunity.
This could only mean…
“We couldn’t hold off the Demon King together, Zion. We need to be ready for incoming attacks.”
– Thud
And Zion appeared at the very front of the front lines.
He too was crouched down, leaning against a sword, sustaining injuries while focusing on recovery.
“I’m sorry. I couldn’t hold on…”
“It’s fine, Zion. Focus on recovery.”
“I’ll revert the sanctuary. It’ll speed up the healing.”
Hanamana returned the sanctuary to its previous position, no longer able to advance.
With the concentrated effects of the sanctuary, Serin and Zion’s injuries healed in an instant, and they rose to take their positions again.
“Defend the Gate.”
“Understood.”
Following the Demon King’s orders, Aurora withdrew toward the Gate.
“Spatial Severance.”
“What…!”
Then Aurora abruptly attempted to sever the space, disregarding all else.
With all her magic focused on spatial control without any distractions.
This would turn into another tug-of-war of magic power. Naturally…
“The Gate has been isolated by space. Aurora is within it as well.”
As humans, we stood no chance.
Then ultimately,
“Then the situation has simplified.”
With Aurora taking such a stance, we could conclude that she wouldn’t interfere any further.
1 vs 5. It had become a basic raid against the Demon King.
Could we win this battle?
The fact that the Demon King constructed this situation with us meant he had utter confidence in not losing as long as the Gate remained intact.
And the recognition of the fight was mutual for us as well.
The objective was still the Gate.
We had to find a way to close the Gate to drive the Demon King away.
[Hop, is it really impossible to break through?]
For that, breaking the spatial barrier was essential, and Naoto asked me for my thoughts.
[I can do it. Just for a moment, at a single point, it’s possible. There’s also the buff from the sanctuary to help.]
Although Aurora possessed immense magic, she was covering the entire Gate.
She was expanding it in a cylindrical shape and had to maintain that situation.
Thus, it would be possible to concentrate magic just for one moment and secure enough space for Zion to pass through.
[Alright. Then we’ll create an opening for the Demon King, and Hop and Zion will strike the Gate in unison. Got it?]
The party members nodded in agreement through the psychic connection.
Now, the fate of this world and our own would be determined by the success or failure of this operation.
