Here we go:
Is this what giving up the first move feels like?
SY passed the first game’s faction selection to us.
It could be seen as confidence, or maybe they just thought, “It’s practice, so it doesn’t matter.”
‘Can’t be a bad thing.’
Anyway, we just had to graciously accept the opponent’s kindness.
“Which faction do you think is good?”
I heard the reply after a while.
[“Umm… wait a minute…”]
Baek Seong-an was a bit better than before, but still out of it.
“…I’ll handle it.”
The faction we chose was Red.
It’s generally more common to choose the Blue side, but the opponent might have predicted that and prepared accordingly.
Plus, considering our team’s current situation, going Red seemed to take advantage of the 5th pick.
‘I hate to admit it, but… it’s clear our team is outmatched in terms of tier.’
In the 2nd division promotions, we could literally crush the opponents by tier, but now we were up against SY.
It would be great to have the upper hand, but one must discern what can and can’t be done.
And…
The real ban/pick phase began.
[Galion]
The opponent’s first ban was Galion.
Seeing that Baek Seong-an’s playstyle leans defensively, SY, with its strong mid, was in a flow to ban a balanced champion.
‘Then…’
I spoke up.
“What should we ban? Do you guys have anything you want to ban?”
[“I have none.”]
[“Me neither.”]
[“I don’t either.”]
[“Ugh…”]
“…”
Given the situation, our ban naturally headed towards mid.
[LeBlanc]
The next ban from the opponent.
[Nami]
Since we were on the Red side, it was a ban to counter the Lucian-Nami combo.
[Twisted Fate]
We banned mid again.
It wasn’t just about Baek Seong-an’s state; the opponent was Rainbow after all.
Even if Baek Seong-an was okay, the decision to invest a ban in mid wouldn’t have changed.
[Talon]
The opponent’s last ban was Talon.
Though I didn’t often use Talon, it seemed to be considered a considerable threat.
Now, it was time for us to make our 3rd ban.
“Do you guys have anything you want to ban?”
[“Hmm. No.”]
The answers stayed the same.
If that’s the case, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to make it a 3rd ban in mid.
“Ban Sandra.”
[Sandra]
Both sides completed their three bans, and now the actual picks began.
[Graves]
As expected, the opponent’s first pick was Graves.
Graves himself has a very high tier in the current meta, is good for first pick, and can even line switch.
‘Well, lately it’s mostly been used in top, though.’
If patches change things, it could be a different scenario, but for now, that was the case.
Our 1st and 2nd picks were up next.
[“What should we pick?”]
Among the current available picks, what could we get from the Red side 1st and 2nd options…?
“I think Yuumi would be good. Ji-hoon, what do you think?”
[“I think it’s fine.”]
“Okay, let’s grab it.”
[“Sure.”]
Unless it was banned, there was no reason not to grab the currently OP Yuumi in this situation.
Above all, Kim Ji-hoon’s Yuumi skills were comparable to pro players in the 1st division.
[Yuumi]
Now it was the 2nd pick time.
There were still champions available among the remaining options, so our decision wouldn’t take long.
“For the 2nd pick, I’ll go with Lee Sin.”
[“Uh… okay.”]
Baek Seong-an was still not in a good state.
[Lee Sin]
It was now the opponent’s 2nd and 3rd picks.
Given the current ban/pick scenario, the mid champ pool was pretty limited, so it was likely they’d grab a mid.
[Reiz]
Sure enough.
The opponent picked Reiz for their 2nd pick, given the limited mid pool.
‘First pick Reiz, huh?’
Is this what Rainbow does?
[Jarvan III]
Next, Jarvan was picked, completing a strong top combination that included mid and jungle.
‘Hmm.’
It was almost our turn for the 3rd pick.
“I think it’d be good to grab a mid since they’ve revealed their top combo already. What do you think?”
[“…Orianna seems good.”]
“Then let’s go with that.”
[“…Got it.”]
[Orianna]
The first picks from both sides were completed.
Then came the 4th ban.
[“What should we ban?”]
Currently, we needed a top and ADC, while the opponent was focusing on bot lane.
In other words, targeting supports seemed like a smart call since the ADCs overlapped.
‘But there’s not really any support that’s genuinely threatening right now.’
I spoke up.
“You guys? Anything worth banning?”
[“No, not really.”]
[“I don’t think so either.”]
Indeed, the confidence of our bottom lane was world-class, so no ban requests came up.
“Then let’s focus on ADCs.”
Since we had the first pick in the 4th round, we’d cut a few ADCs and take whatever’s left.
[Aphelios]
It was now the opponent’s ban phase.
[Kennen]
As expected, the opponent focused on banning top.
[Miss Fortune]
We cut one more ADC champion, and the opponent finished their final ban.
[Nyar]
Once again, it was a top ban.
[“Hmph, they didn’t cut mine. How generous.”]
Kim Jae-min huffed.
But there was nothing we could do about that.
Though they were the same age, and with different positions, objectively, Seo Yeon-woo’s evaluation was simply higher than Kim Jae-min’s.
[“I’ll take Ezreal.”]
“Okay.”
[Ezreal]
Now it was the opponent’s 4th and 5th picks.
With this, the opponent’s combo was all revealed, and we could now funnel our last pick into top.
[Jhin]
[Leona]
Since they already had a strong damage dealer for the top side, the opponent’s bot lane picked a supporting combo.
And the moment of truth arrived for our final pick.
“Yeon-woo, you can do this, right?”
[“Yes.”]
When we were on the Red side, the 5th pick against the opponent’s first pick Graves was one of the scenarios we had prepared for.
[Jax]
Today, OLZ’s Jax is ready to step up.
The bans/picks were all wrapped up.
+
[SY / OLZ]
Top: Graves / Jax
Jungle: Jarvan III / Lee Sin
Mid: Reiz / Orianna
ADC: Jhin / Ezreal
Support: Leona / Yuumi
+
Overall, you could say both sides got what they needed, right?
‘The key is… the top.’
Of course, other lanes are important, but this game hinges significantly on whether Honor’s Jax can break through TheOne’s Graves.
“Let’s all do our best.”
[“Fighting!”]
[“Fighting!”]
[“Yup…”]
“Are you okay?”
[“Yeah, I’m fine.”]
Though it didn’t look like he was okay.
‘…Hmm.’
In this not-so-great scenario, finally, the first scrim with SY began.
