Your Commander-in-Chief – Chapter 189

My character’s final stats were as follows:

Strength 6

Agility 15

Stamina 9

Since my Strength stat had taken a significant hit, I decided to boost my Agility stat as much as I could.

As soon as I created my character, I was transported to the middle of a dark room.

“Whoa…”

I immediately started to move my arms and legs.

Was it because my Strength stat was low? The weight of the armor I was wearing felt quite heavy.

While I was fiddling with the solid armor that sloped down to my shoulders, two weapons materialized in front of me.

One was that katana I had seen in various subculture references.

The elegantly elongated blade gleamed with a bluish shine.

Next was a massive sword.

This nodachi, as it was called, at first glance resembled a katana.

But its handle and blade looked as if they were meant for giants.

I let out a small groan, contemplating which of the two swords I should choose.

The indecision didn’t last long. I reached out and gripped the gigantic nodachi.

“Ugh…”

The weight of the sword in my hand made me stagger.

Was it because I was too accustomed to the game Deron? The heavy sensation in my wrist felt unfamiliar.

If it were Deron, I would’ve swung around such a sword with one hand…

Brushing aside that fleeting thought, I lifted the sword high with both hands.

“Ha…”

And then I realized something. I couldn’t wield this weapon in my current state.

Reluctantly, I set down the nodachi and picked up the katana instead.

The katana also felt rather hefty, but it didn’t feel as burdensome as before.

As I began to inspect the katana from various angles, the nodachi that I had placed on the floor disappeared, replaced by a training straw dummy.

[Use the Samurai’s basic skill [Drawing Sword] to attack.]

[Drawing Sword]

When drawing the sword from its sheath, ignore 20% of the opponent’s defense for 1 second.

As I read the message floating in front of me, I frowned.

As far as I knew, skills in VRS didn’t come with any system adjustments.

In other words, it meant that I had to use all skills myself.

Since it specified that I had to draw the sword from its sheath, I needed to put the katana in the sheath first.

I grabbed the sheath hanging at my waist and shoved the katana inside.

Swish- Thud-

“Ha…”

A low sigh escaped my lips. Beyond my narrowed gaze, the straw dummy stood there blankly.

I swung my sword toward the enemy. At that moment, my body instinctively struck a pose.

It wasn’t too different from what I had done in Deron.

The only change was the type of weapon.

“Hya!”

With a short shout, a powerful slash erupted from within me.

Swoosh-!

My right leg shot out forcefully to stomp on the ground. The handle of the sword in my hand was trembling.

The first strike was successful. But the problem was what came next.

The sharply gleaming blade of my katana got buried halfway into the straw dummy, lodged deep within.

Even with all my strength, pulling it out felt impossible.

“Ugh!”

If one hand wouldn’t work, I’d go for two.

I steadied my position and gripped the katana with all my might.

At that moment, the katana that had been stuck suddenly came loose—whoosh—and, unable to regain my balance, I fell to the ground.

“Gah…”

I was hit with the realization of how vital the Strength stat was.

Yerin’s words about Strength being more important than anything else echoed in my mind once more.

Picking myself up from the floor, I looked down at my hands with a serious expression.

My small, delicate, soft palms didn’t seem suited to wielding a sword.

[Equip the Samurai’s secondary weapon!]

Wait, does this mean there’s still a tutorial quest left?

I checked the message floating ahead of me and looked at the items that appeared in the air.

One was a short dagger that looked like the blade of the katana had been bluntly cut off, and the other was a short bow with a quiver containing several arrows.

The quest message instructed me to equip the secondary weapon.

In other words, all of this was standard equipment given to the Samurai.

I slung the dagger and the short bow onto my back, securely tying the quiver to my right thigh.

“Ugh…”

It felt quite heavy. It was like standing there in full battle gear.

After that, a very simple quest began.

Shoot the bow I received. Swing the dagger to stab the straw dummy.

Success or failure didn’t matter.

As long as I performed those actions, the quest would be completed.

And that was that.

It basically just introduced me to the ways of using weapons, and the tutorial came to an end.

When I came to my senses, I found myself standing alone in the waiting room.

VRS offered various game modes.

There was Conquest, where teams battled to capture specific regions.

A straightforward 1v1 Deathmatch designed to test skills.

Dogfight, where players could frenzy against numerous opponents.

And Battle Royale, where players started scattered in a wide area, surviving until the end.

Along with many other diverse modes, the overwhelmingly popular ones were Deathmatch and Conquest.

My gaze landed on the Conquest matching button.

I had heard that to get a grip on the overall flow of the game, nothing compared to joining in on Conquest.

I immediately initiated the Conquest match.

Perhaps about ten seconds passed.

A message popped up confirming the match was successful, and a countdown began.

Truly, this game was immensely popular, leagues above Deron.

Wiping my racing heart, I waited for the setting to change.

At that moment, with a bright light, my body began to move somewhere.

The surrounding sounds that had faded began to revive, while the rough wind brushed past my ears.

I had been transported to the Conquest location.

“Oh, the last one has arrived.”

“Are you a newbie? You’re level 1.”

“Seems like it… a female Samurai… short height…”

“You made an attractive character, huh.”

As I recognized that the surrounding scenery had changed, a group of four people who had been standing slightly apart approached me, casually chatting.

Above their heads floated blue nicknames.

Clearly, they were on my team.

The first person was a knight fully clad in plate armor.

With a massive long sword hanging at his waist, he pushed up his helmet with a clanking sound.

“You’re new to the game, right?”

“Sounds like you’re just using a secondary character for roleplay or something…”

The individual mumbling in annoyance at the knight’s polite comment was a dark and brooding Assassin.

It seemed, just like in Deron, the Assassins here also fell under the category of thieves.

I ignored the Assassin user and bowed my head instead.

“Hello.”

“If you have any difficulties while progressing, feel free to ask anything.”

“How kind of you.”

“Newbies are precious, after all.”

I tilted my head, reflecting on the knight’s words.

While I agreed to some extent that newbies were precious, it really only applied to those who showed potential.

It seemed unusual for them to be so nice when I had yet to make any judgments.

Perhaps I had yet to encounter a newbie who thinks that all the support and help from the veterans is a natural right just because they are labeled as newbies.

I chuckled slightly and nodded.

“Do you know the basic game mechanics?”

“Killing enemies, capturing territories… if allied, capturing speed increases… that’s about all I know.”

“That’s enough. For now, avoid acting alone and try to move with your teammates whenever possible.”

I nodded at the knight’s advice.

By the way, the weight of the armor I was wearing was heavier than expected.

Was I unable to take it off?

Just as I was pondering, the invisible barrier that had been holding back my teammates disappeared, and NPC mercenaries in front of us charged out with fierce battle cries.

Woooaaaah!

“Let’s go too.”

I started running alongside my teammates.

I needed to figure out how this game worked, so I planned not to act alone unless absolutely necessary.

As I dashed along the path through the large forest, a smooth marble-paved road stretched before me.

At the end of the road stood a large fortress; we must have been the invading team trying to capture it.

At that moment, the Assassin user, who had been running alongside me, veered off to another path.

As I watched him go, the knight explained.

“That’s an Assassin character. They operate solo, focusing on assassinating key NPCs.”

I nodded quietly at the knight’s words.

I hadn’t realized the game involved more than just capturing territories, it seemed there was something important beyond that.

Not long after, a group of NPCs sprinting ahead launched into battle.

“It looks like there’s a fight starting. I’m not the best at fighting, so I can’t explain while in battle. Just try to survive. The NPC soldiers aren’t weak, so keep your guard up.”

With those words, the knight drew his sword and charged ahead.

“Woooaaaah!”

He let out a battle cry that was nothing like the friendly demeanor he had shown me earlier.

The knight swung his sword with all its might, clearing out enemy NPC soldiers.

As he dealt with the ordinary foot soldiers, he grabbed his sword like a handle and swung it like a hammer to smash a soldier’s head.

Blood erupted, and countless corpses began piling around him.

As I watched, I placed my hand on the katana at my waist.

Watching them fight didn’t seem very difficult.

With a confident expression, I charged towards the enemy.

Tatadadadad!

“Hya!”

The quickly drawn katana grazed the neck of an enemy soldier.

Swish!

Where the armor didn’t provide coverage, the thin fabric of flesh was easily severed, dealing a massive wound with just a light slash.

I looked down at the soldier, who was collapsing in a pool of blood.

“Ooh…”

Not bad…

This feels satisfying.

A different kind of fun compared to Deron.

Just at that moment, I sensed something approaching with keen awareness.

It was fast. A charging figure showing no intention of hiding its presence.

“Dieeee!!”

With a rough roar, a giant, hairy man came flying in.

He swung his two axes threateningly, smashing everything that stood in his way.

With skin that appeared red-hot and a large horned helmet on his head.

This man’s character was a Viking.

“Samuraiii!!”

The man who had taken down all the surrounding NPCs glared at me and roared menacingly.

He’s coming—

That intuition proved correct.

The enemy Viking fixed his gaze on me and started charging swiftly.
