“What is this…?”
Early in the morning. While sitting at the table, dealing with breakfast, I stared blankly at the emails that had arrived in my inbox. Was it because my email was exposed while communicating with overseas gamers? My mailbox was flooded with a ton of spam emails.
“What are you so surprised about?”
The question came from Harang. He was looking at me with half-closed eyes, munching on toast.
“Oh, it’s just that I got a lot of spam emails.”
“Spam emails?”
I nodded and started moving the emails in my inbox to the trash. What kind of fool would impersonate the VRS pro team and send emails like this? Not just one team, but several teams at once!
“What do they say?”
“They’re pretending to be from the VRS pro team.”
“VRS…? Is that even real?”
“Why are they sending me emails? I’m not even a VRS user.”
“Huh…”
I responded to Harang’s question while shoving toast into my mouth. The crisply toasted bread had a subtle buttery aroma that made it enjoyable to eat.
“You went out before the VRS event recently, right? They probably sent you those because of that.”
“I went, but I didn’t win.”
“Why not check it out?”
I nodded at Harang’s suggestion and opened one of the emails I had tossed in the trash. The first one I read was from someone claiming to be a scout for the W.S team. Summarizing the email, it complimented my unconventional play style and asked if I wouldn’t consider showcasing that talent in the pro world.
That seemed way too suspicious.
If it were just one team sending the email, I might not have suspected a scam. I deleted the email from the self-proclaimed W.S scout and checked the next one.
This time, it was an email from a scout of the N.R team. The content was quite similar. They admired my play style and wanted to team up. Another similar email arrived shortly after, with everyone wanting to join me, asking me to join their teams.
I shook my head and concluded, “This is all a scam.”
“Huh…”
“There’s no way this many teams would send an email to just one person, especially not a winner.”
“Well…”
“Of course, I know I’m amazing and extremely cute, but the similar timing of the emails makes it clear it’s a scam.”
Harang stared at my response in disbelief, and the squished toast in his mouth dropped to the floor.
Gross…
I clicked my tongue and turned away.
“Why not reach out to them?”
“No way. It’s a waste of time.”
“Come on… it could be real.”
“Even if it is, I don’t care. I won’t do it anyway.”
“A pro… someone like you could debut as a professional and earn a lot of money right?”
“I can earn in Deron.”
“Wait… Deron… Yeah, that’s true, but that won’t last a lifetime…?”
“Deron will last a lifetime. I’ll play Deron until I die.”
“What a crazy girl…”
Calling me crazy, huh? What can’t a brother say?
“What would you do if Deron went under?”
“It won’t go under! Don’t you know the global server is thriving? You’re playing it too.”
“No… I said ‘what if’.”
“Hmm…”
I rubbed my chin in thought, nodding to Harang’s words. If Deron were to go under…
I still wasn’t worried. My school grades were top-notch. I’ll manage somehow.
“I’m doing well on my tests, so it’s okay.”
“You… haven’t studied until now, right? And you still did well?”
I nodded at Harang’s words. When I first opened my eyes in this body, I needed help studying, but once I caught up, I didn’t need help anymore. Isn’t this all thanks to my natural genius?
Now, I didn’t even need to study. Maybe luck was on my side, since I managed to answer correctly even on problems I didn’t know during the tests.
“Looks like you have no backup plan…”
“Why would I need a backup plan? Do you have any idea how much gold I earn a month?”
“How much?”
“Um, well…”
“No matter how much you earn, you just spend it all on equipment.”
I nodded at Harang’s comment. The reason I was saving gold was for my character’s growth. Spending it on gear was entirely reasonable.
“Sigh… I just don’t get it.”
As I kept nodding alone, Harang sighed and stood up. Seeing him pick up the bag leaning against the wall, it seemed he was off to do something suspicious again today. His bag always contained a sweaty gym uniform when he returned home.
“Hey, don’t wash your gym clothes with mine!”
“I won’t, you brat.”
“I warned you.”
“I said I won’t.”
“Hurry up and leave.”
“I’m going anyway.”
“And don’t be late. We have a raid to do.”
Just as Harang was about to leave the living room, he paused for a moment and turned back to look at me.
What’s he staring at? His gaze seemed quite disrespectful.
“What are you staring at?”
“Hah…”
Harang, who had been silent for a while, sighed and left the living room. Why does he have to look at me like that when he’s leaving without saying a word? It’s so unsettling.
I continued chewing on the toast while watching his back. Just then, Mom walked out of the bedroom, dressed in business attire. It seemed like it was almost time for her to leave for work.
“Did you eat well?”
“Oh, Mom.”
“Where’s your brother?”
“Oh, he left a while ago.”
“Already? He didn’t even say goodbye…”
Mom murmured in a soft voice, seemingly disappointed that Harang had left first.
Seriously, what’s so nice about that guy that she feels that way?
“Mom, he called me a crazy girl again.”
“That guy? You should call him your brother.”
“Yeah, but he said I’m a crazy girl.”
“Oh really? What did you two even talk about this time?”
I tilted my head at Mom’s question. What did we talk about? Since I couldn’t remember, it probably wasn’t anything important.
“Nothing much, really?”
Mom lightly laughed at my answer and picked up a piece of toast from the table. Was she getting full with just one side of toast? I looked at her with concern.
“Is that enough for you?”
“Yeah.”
“Want me to prepare a lunchbox?”
“You…?”
“Nowadays, there are a lot of tasty things you can order online.”
As I said that, I nodded. I didn’t mind selling off some of the gold I had saved for Mom.
Selling gold to buy a lunchbox. What a good daughter I am!
I felt a sense of pride at my thought and looked at Mom. She also seemed touched, looking down at me without saying a word.
“Hayun.”
“Yes?”
“How about we practice cooking together starting this weekend?”
“Cooking practice…?”
Cooking? What does that even mean in this day and age? As long as you can boil ramen and fry eggs, you’re good to go.
I shook my head in distaste.
“No way.”
“I’m worried about you. What will you do when you get married later?”
“Married…?”
“Yeah.”
Mom’s words made my appetite vanish. The thought of marrying a man completely freaked me out. Just imagining it made my skin crawl.
I set the piece of toast I had in my mouth down and responded.
“I’m not going.”
“No way am I going.”
No matter how much Mom asks, that’s out of the question.
Mom only gave me a mysterious smile in response to my refusal.
She didn’t provide any substantial answer.
“Take good care of the house. I’ll be back.”
“Bye~”
With that, Mom left, leaving me alone in the house. I put the dishes on the table into the dishwasher and returned to my room.
Of course, I planned to log into Deron.
“What the…?”
But I couldn’t achieve my objective. Deron suddenly went into emergency maintenance.
It didn’t seem like any detailed information was posted on the Deron gallery, so it looked like they found some internal flaws.
I frowned. I had planned to farm some gold until the raid started, but now I was wasting time waiting for maintenance.
But what can I do? If a bug was found, I had to endure it.
As I let out a deep sigh, my gaze landed on a game that was sitting in the corner of my desktop.
VRS.
It was a game I had enjoyed playing recently, so I hadn’t deleted it.
The expected time for the emergency maintenance was three hours. With this much time, wouldn’t it be okay to take a quick detour?
The decision was quick. Since I had nothing else to do, I decided to log into VRS.
As I selected the VRS icon, brilliant light poured down, and my body began to fly somewhere.
I always think this, but the sensation I feel every time I log into a game is quite bizarre.
With a short loading time, I arrived in a dark, narrow waiting room.
I checked my account information. It seemed that the effect of the coupon provided by Deron had expired because all the characters that were once unlocked were now locked again.
The character levels and traits were similar.
The effect of that coupon only lasted until the event ended.
With low levels and locked skills, I couldn’t enjoy a proper game in this state, so I thought I’d try out another mode I hadn’t done before.
[Battle Royale]
A relatively new game mode. Everyone drops onto a specific map under the same conditions. A total of 100 players participate at once, and there’s only one victor.
From what I read in the community, it seems that VRS prepared this mode to attract users with different playstyles.
In this mode, I could probably enjoy the game lightly.
True gamers learn the mechanics of a game through experience.
Without hesitation, I pressed the match button.
Then a countdown appeared.
When about 10 seconds had passed, the game connected.
Is this a popular enough game for it to find 100 players in under 10 seconds?
[Ruined Ruins]
[Players: 100]
The name of the map appeared at the top.
While thinking about that, my body began to move along with light.
It felt similar to when moving to the battlefield in Conquest mode.
With a bright pillar of light, I arrived in the middle of an incredibly vast ruin.
I was thrown into this area without any explanation at all.
Rather than feeling panicked, I experienced a slight sense of anticipation.
The first thing I checked was to open my inventory.
The translucent window that popped up showed my character’s status and the number of items I could carry at once along with my available weight.
Since there were no separate strength, agility, or stamina stats, it seemed that everyone was on equal footing in this mode.
Currently, my character was naked except for basic clothing.
The goal was to farm items to survive and be the last one standing.
I noted the objectives of this game mode and began to move from my spot.
Right now, I was walking in the middle of a partially collapsed ruin.
The cracked and split stone ground and the remains of fallen buildings were mixed together, blocking the way.
While searching the area, I discovered a sword covered in rust lying on the ground.
[Rusty Iron Sword]
Strength +1
It was a very simple item description. Still, it was better than nothing.
I equipped the rusty iron sword.
