Your Commander-in-Chief – Chapter 255

“Umm…”

I got out of bed and turned on my phone screen to check the time.

It was currently 7 AM.

I had woken up 30 minutes earlier than the alarm I set.

I frowned.

The memories of what happened yesterday came rushing back vividly.

After the Exorcist Guild’s raid, Jupiter had to take medication to calm his overwhelming senses.

I didn’t exactly know what the medication did, but I at least knew that Jupiter couldn’t play the game anymore.

In the end, the planned farming session was canceled throughout the night, and we spent our time hunting the remaining exorcists until midnight.

Despite having slept soundly, I felt uneasy.

I stretched my stiff body and headed to the bathroom.

*

It was the first day of high school.

But it didn’t feel all that different from middle school.

That was because the school was right next door.

Walking down the familiar street, I arrived at the large school gate.

With the building constructed right next to it, the gate was shared between the middle and high schools.

I stood there looking at the tiny kids who just enrolled.

The sight of a small girl and a boy, timidly walking in their uniforms toward school, was just too cute.

Watching them made a smile naturally break across my face.

Then, it happened.

My sensitive senses detected someone approaching.

Cautiously, someone was sneaking up, making efforts to hide their presence, but they couldn’t fool my senses.

I could even hear their breathing.

I suddenly turned around to look at the person approaching from behind.

Our eyes locked in mid-air, wide-open eyes, a gaping mouth.

The small girl seemed to silently scream in surprise.

“Ellie.”

“Uh, how did you know…?”

“I can hear everything.”

With my sharper senses than others, I was sensitive to changes around me.

So if she thought of sneaking up on me, she should probably give up.

“Ahem, ahem…”

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

Ellie said that while fiddling with her hands.

It seemed she had something to say as she gathered her hands and glanced nervously at me.

I took a step closer and asked.

“Do you need to say something?”

“Um, um…”

“What is it?”

“Um, lunch…”

Lunch?

Could it be that the reason she came looking for me since the morning was to ask if we could have lunch together?

I let out a resigned laugh at Ellie.

I could easily join her for lunch.

But was that really okay?

Ellie was in a different class.

To fit in with her class, it would be better for her to eat with her own friends.

“Are you not eating with your classmates?”

“…I feel so burdened that I think I’ll die.”

Burdened?

At that moment, I realized that Ellie was not your average Korean.

Ellie was a pure Westerner, not mixed-race at all. Naturally, she would attract a lot of attention.

Even now, students passing through the school gate were stealing glances at Ellie and me.

“So, you were waiting here to make a lunch date with me?”

I said while looking around.

Since the new semester had started, it was still cold outside.

To think Ellie was waiting for me, shivering in this cold…

My heart ached a bit.

“Okay. Come to our classroom during lunch.”

“R-Really? You’re really going to eat with me?”

“There’s no reason I can’t.”

“Thank you…!”

Ellie seemed genuinely touched by my words and smiled brightly, shaking her shoulders in excitement.

Her way of speaking felt so strange.

It was a mix of random English phrases, the speech pattern of a Paladin from Deron, and the occasional expressions of an ordinary girl, creating a chaotic vibe.

“It’s cold, let’s go in.”

“Ah, okay!”

I headed towards the school building with Jupiter.

Unlike the cold wind blowing outside, the entire corridor was filled with warm heater air, and I quickly felt cozy.

“It’s time to say goodbye…”

“Anyway, we’ll see each other during lunch, right?”

“It feels too long…”

Ellie, who had to part ways since her class was different, murmured as she stood next to me looking disappointed.

I sighed, glancing down at her.

Could this small girl really navigate school life well?

“I’ll see you later.”

If we were in the same class, I could’ve helped her with various things.

I greeted Ellie and headed to my classroom.

Ellie’s gaze didn’t leave me until I entered the classroom.

“Oh.”

Once inside, I looked around and let out a short admiration.

I thought the room would be loud because it was all girls, but everyone was quietly sitting, either on their phones or reading books.

Guess once you reach high school, everyone becomes an adult?

I shook my head, recalling hazy memories.

No, that couldn’t be right.

Being a high school student is supposed to be a time full of energy and vigor.

My previous high school years were full of events and incidents.

It was just that this particular class had a unique atmosphere.

I carefully walked to my seat and sat down.

The classmates didn’t show any special reaction even after I walked in.

After a brief glance, they turned back to what they were doing.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

The casual greeting came from Sohee, who sat next to me.

But in that moment, I caught a very strange movement.

The small girl sitting right in front of Sohee flinched the moment she heard Sohee’s voice.

“Hayun, aren’t you going to greet back?”

“Ah, sorry. Hi, Sohee.”

I shook my head at Sohee’s comment and shifted my gaze.

Sohee, who was sitting down, was smiling warmly at me as always.

As I sat down, organizing my bag and thinking.

Although I had become a high school student, having Sohee beside me didn’t give me the sense that anything had changed.

It just felt like a continuation of middle school life.

“Do you need to go to the Health Room?”

“The Health Room? No, I’m fine today…”

I tilted my head in response to Sohee’s sudden question.

“Are you going to the Health Room again today?” It was a question I was all too familiar with.

I always heard it in middle school.

But this was high school.

Surely, there wouldn’t be a Health Room left from middle school days.

So, I couldn’t help but feel a strange dissonance from Sohee’s question.

“Did you not stay up late last night?”

“Uh… something like that… But Sohee, can you use the Health Room freely here too?”

Sohee simply smiled at my question.

Her wordless smile was her go-to weapon when she found it hard to respond.

I was weak to Sohee’s smiling face.

“If you need to go to the Health Room, just let me know. I’ll prepare it for you.”

I didn’t ask what she would prepare.

What she’d prepare was obvious.

It would be something like fragrant aromas to ensure deep sleep and luxurious pillows and blankets.

Time passed, and our homeroom teacher entered the classroom to start the morning assembly.

With a light greeting followed by question time.

As that brief time passed, the teacher began selecting a class president.

But no one volunteered.

As the silence continued, the teacher opened the attendance book and called out names.

“Sohee Lee…”

“Yes.”

“Hayun Seo.”

“Yes…?”

“Sohee Lee will be class president, and Hayun will be vice president. Since there were no volunteers… no one has any objections, right?”

No one raised objections to the teacher’s statement.

Just a silent stillness ensued.

Sohee and I unexpectedly found ourselves assigned the roles of class president and vice president.

I glanced up at Sohee and tried to gauge her feelings.

Was she really okay with this?

I thought about how being president and vice president was merely a pretty shell.

It involved a lot of work while the authority granted was just lowly errands for the teachers.

That was my image of class president and vice president.

So I couldn’t tolerate it.

At that point, I decided to take a small detour.

“Teacher.”

“Um? Why?”

“I don’t want to be vice president.”

“What…? You don’t want to?”

“Yep.”

“Uh, why not?”

“I just don’t want to. It’s too busy.”

I frowned while saying that.

Being assigned such a useless title would only make me busy all the time.

I’d rather spend my time browsing Deron’s community site to gather new information.

“Don’t do that…”

“I don’t want to.”

“Ah…”

If I said I didn’t want to, then I didn’t want to.

I shook my head in response.

But the teacher’s reaction was strange.

She seemed pale and fidgety, glancing nervously at me.

Or more precisely, she was definitely checking Sohee’s reactions next to me.

“Hayun.”

“Yeah?”

“Please reconsider. Let’s do this.”

“I don’t want to. Being a vice president is busy. You have to keep running around.”

“That’s…”

“Honestly, I’d rather check out Deron than do that.”

“But… being a diligent vice president will make your grades better…”

Do I have to spend a year as a messenger for my grade scores?

I thought not.

And I was already doing pretty well on tests even without that.

So I didn’t need it.

“I’ll be fine without it.”

Sohee would know as well.

My incredible academic abilities.

This was innate. I always maintained a high ranking without attending class regularly.

What if I actually studied?

That would be a cataclysmic event.

Those who study diligently might just get disheartened.

A whale could never swim in a pond of goldfish.

I nodded and sat back down.

“So I won’t do it.”

“Ah…”

I thought that would explain everything.

Sohee would’ve realized it too.

After realizing something from my answer, Sohee stood there blankly, shaking her head and speaking.

“Then I won’t do it either.”

The class president and vice president, chosen directly by the teacher, both rejected the titles and sat back down.

The teacher standing at the podium looked pale, clutching the attendance book.

“Teacher. I think we should choose other kids.”

“Y-Yeah… It seems that forcing it isn’t a good idea…”

“Yes. I think so too.”

Sohee carried on a calm conversation with the teacher.

In the end, the teacher who was trying to assign roles to Sohee and me called out names in the attendance book, assigning other kids to the positions of class president and vice president.
